3rd November 2007 - Company Parade

The day started off with the bandsman test by Captain Tan and Miss Foo. The test started around 9 and was followed by the usual band practice. At 2 25 p.m. while I was having a squad meeting with B1, I was informed that I will be the NCO in charge for the parade. Being briefed merely minutes before the real deal, I almost panicked because it was my very first time doing in it. In addition, I had a minor sore throat. Against all odds I took the challenge (thank God the officer in charge was Mr. Jason =).Singsparation was conducted by Corporal Wong Hoe Kit on behalf of squad C2 which I felt went on successfully. Then members broke off for Christian Education and awards. Drill was basically the same weekly routine. This time around, the drill squad was divided into two groups lead by two Drill basic holders, LCpl Cham Kwan Weng and LCpl Khoo Ming Yuan. They were assigned to take over their respective squads for a couple of weeks. Next was the closing parade. The tension eased a little during closing even though I was still slightly nervous. Then a few of us stayed back for basketball until dusk.

WELL IN THE END IT’S THE EXPIRIENCE THAT COUNTS = )

10th November 2007 - Company Parade

Today’s parade stated as usual with the band. However many people (including officers) came late due to the rain which caused the traffic jam. This traffic jam isn’t the normal one because there is a riot at Dataran Merdeka. We were advised by the officers not to wear yellow today.

The band practiced a few songs which will be played at Medan for the company trip. We had our practice at the Dojo and the hall from 12.30pm to 2.00pm.Then it was time for opening at 2.30pm after ‘resting’ a while. The attendance was 65 present 20 excused and the rest absent. There were also some ‘ghost’ members because their names are in the squad list but they are often missing in action. The singspiration is led by the primers. However right after beginning to enjoy the song the whole thing (computer and projector) went down and we ended up playing taking off our boots and shoes and putting them on again.

Christian Education was cancelled todaybecause many of the instructors were busy or late. The award class continued as usual. Then it was drill time. As many were late the previous week all the Boys came very early for drill. As a result all of them were early for drill. After drill, it was time for closing parade.

All this didn’t end the parade many had to stay back for the Medan trip meeting and it ended at about 7.10pm

A normal meeting day with a few surprises

The day started off with band practice as usual at 12.00pm, I wasn't there so I don't know what happened. Then followed by Opening Parade at 2.30 pm. The NCO in-charge for the day was me, Corporal Ignatius Goh (buahahahaha XD, didn't do for long time already so was a bit nervous :p) The attendance for the day was 80 present, 13 excuse and 30 absent (considered below average by my standards) Next was Singsparation lead by Corporal Wong Hoe Kit, which i find was a bit zombie like, partly because SOMEBODY couldn't make in and informed Corporal Wong late. In other news, SOMEBODY with an American accent is BACK. That somebodies name starts with a C.. He is none other then Sergenat Hooi Chin Gian He is as Energetic, and Crazy(in a good way Xp) as ever. Just a brief history on Sergeant Hooi's disappearance, after weeks after the 50th musical, Mr Hooi went on study leave to well, study for his major exams, which was by the way very stressful for him according to his mom). Next, Bible Study, which went on smoothly as always. Followed by Awards, currently we are conducting Target class for all the freshies, Computer Knowledge Class;both basic and advance(which by the way is massive just ask Primer Tan Kok Yau) and Safety Class; Basic (taught by me, buahahahahaha XD) and Advance by Primer Sanjay(aka SANJAYA!! XD) and primer Sim. Next, Drill class, today we announced the results of the last test (basic paying Complement) mostly passed but to those who failed Don't Give Up!! This is merely an obstacle that God has put in front of you to improve yourself :) We had a really whacky Competition(created by our Captain) where the commanding boy is challenge to shout the name of their comrades in random arrangement in the shortest time possible. Objective of this challenge is Learn how to shout like a commander, know your friends name(ice-breaker), to build self confidence. (Hmm wonder if i missed out anything) The Winner of the Challenge was Lance Corporal Benjamin (YAY!!!). At about 6.00pm we had our closing parade. As usual, at the beginning of the parade was the announcements and reminders(Especially for the Medan trip fella's). Oh, just to let the world know Our Captain is gonna be a FATHER in February 2008(according to Mr.Tan) God Bless Mr. Tan, his family and 3rd KL company.

This is Corporal Ignatius Goh reporting.

Why Blog?

You may have visited this blog several times and wondered to yourselves.. why do we do this? Reports may sometimes seem to be a bureaucratic piece of nonsense but having a blog does serve a role in the new age and has a high note of relevancy today.
Let me share with you the vision of why I started this blog in the first place. First of all, it gives us a clear view of the past. At the moment 3rd KL has no idea of what has happened in the past. All records were either lost or never made in the first place. However, we are fortunate for officers like Paul Peter and former 3rd KL captain Peter Siew who has worked closely with Paul Judy, the Anchor Magazine editor of that time. If weren't for them we'd have absolutely no clue of 3rd KL's past. So, this whole concept - reports, news, videos, newsletters, etc are not just to display how active the company is, but also a history documentation where we can refer back to past strength's and weaknesses, hence improve of them. It's pretty much like writing a diary. If you have a diary or attempted one before, I'm sure it feels fun to reflect on what you've done in the past. The same concept applies here.

Apart from the formalities mentioned above, blogs also allow a certain funk. So I dare say, the more active a blog.. the more happening a company is.. especially when the majority of the members use the Internet. It reflects the enthusiasm each members shares towards making 3rd KL a better place to be. Or are we just people coming in and out of the company just hoping for something to happen? I guess the biggest problem with us is we forget that good things only can happen when we do something about it. Articles of a blog need not solely be reports or mention of events.. they are just part of it. Whatever is relevant to BB.. jokes.. pictures.. thoughts.. they all act as a medium of communication between individuals. In the end, this will help stimulate creativity, intellect and writing experience which will be helpful in life (which is one of the main reason why I'm encouraging you guys in the first place). In a sad company culture where very few of our members even have personal blogs.. Boots and Brasso can help spark the interest. So far, a handful of people have been inspired to start their own blogs such as LCpl. Alex Tan, but we need more people to cultivate this habit amongst themselves.

Sometimes people see blogs as an unprofessional and childish thing for organisations to have. Try logging on to the websites of big companies. Welcome to the real world, where the blogging/wiki concept is already in the latest management textbooks - they serve as a medium of communication. I hope you've seen the relevance of this topic and would contribute towards the effectiveness of this website. So please, help 3rd KL avoid turning this blog into another one of Voon's ramblings and make this blog the most happening one in BBM!

19th May 2007 - Company Parade

Present: 105
Excused : 12
Absent : 18

OIC : WO. Joe Wong replacing WO. Jason Khoo
Duty Nco : LCpl Kenny Ho Yew Hon
Squad Duty : A2

Today's start was normal with the Band practice. We were asked to help one of YMCA's friend Mr Tsui, a music lover. We helped him play and record a marching band song. It was a short, easy, nice and enjoyable song. During the full band, we practice the song and recorded it and it turn out very nice! I was really excited about my first NCO duties as Parade Commander. Kept thinking if there was anything I missed out. There was so much I had to do and such.

Well, the parade started around 2.35pm. After opening parade with Anchor song and opening prayer we all gathered at the hall for A2's leading of the day. They sang a song with the company and played a game with them about passing a ball with their legs as the music goes on. It was kind of enjoying for most of them.

After leading from Squad A2, we had Bible study with Lt. Alan Yong leading. We discussed about why we are here in this Boys' Brigade. Then everyone moved to their own sections of our Golden Jubilee Musical practice after Bible study.

It was until 5.35pm everyone gathered back down at the basketball court for the closing parade. Attendance did change and it became more! haha...Band council was postphoned to next week and there is a performance for School Teachers' Day, lead by Corporal Wong Hoe Kit.
After closing, some Boys' looked for others for dinner, some others went for meetings. SMKTD Exco members were called for a short meeting to discuss a few problems. After that everyone went home.

14th April 2007 - Company Parade

* This should be below the previous post... =P

On this day, I had my piano exam in the morning. After that, I received an SMS from Sgt. Lim requesting to swap duties for Sgt. Major. I was already running late, so I rushed home, polished up my uniform and headed for YMCA. I arrived about half an hour before band practice was over.

During squad meeting, attendance was not very encouraging, but for Parade, the attendance recorded is:

Present: 97
Excused: 15
Absent: 29

Before that, during squad meeting, only about 40-50 boys were downstairs for squad meeting. There seemed to be a certain lack of urgency to attend uniform inspection (sq. meeting) , or the boys are just afraid of the scorching sun. However, this attitude cannot be tolerated and should not be repeated in the future.

After an opening parade in unusually hot weather conditions, we moved into the hall for singspiration, followed by announcements .Then, we were split up into our separate sessions for Golden Jubilee practice. The band went down to do some marching practice, the juniors had their singing practice, while Cpl. Soo taught the recruits BB Knowledge component for their Target Badge. Then, the basketballers, creative drillers and recruits had their respective practices. Today, there was a bit of time wasted in between sessions partly due to the rain, the lack of urgency mentioned earlier and also partly due to the fact that the boys were not yet used to the new timetable for Golden Jubilee Rehearsals and needed some time to adjust.

After rehearsal was Drill time for seniors and then closing parade at around 5.40 p.m.

21st April 2007 - Company Parade

Present: 103
Absent: 25
Excuse: 14

OIC: Mr. Jason Khoo
Duy NCO: Sgt. Lim Han Sheng
Squad Duties: C2

Well for today, the day started as early as 7.30am at Pathways. SMK Taman Desa drill team members had a camp the day before as preparation for the coming inter-school competition this coming week. The morning training lasted till around 10am and off to YMCA for band.

The weather was fine until opening parade at around 2.30pm when the showers began. All officers were present except for Mr. Tan and Mr. Lawrence who were up north in Penang for the Brigade Council Meeting (BCM). Mr. Yong was present for a while and had to leave because his newborn baby girl was sick (please pray for her). Opening parade was extended till around 3.05pm today due to certain habits such as being late/slow, leaving cups behind hoping that it walks to the dustbin and certain amount of lost and found items.

C2, the squad on duty led singspiration. A few announcements were made before we had another singing session. This time it was led by our very own Mr. Joe teaching our finale song for the Golden Jubilee Celebrations ‘I Just Can’t Stop The Music’.

Next was band for the seniors and dancing for the juniors. As for the recruits it was Target Badge class for them. SMK Taman Desa drillers had their run again while Sgt. Hooi led the remaining members during drill. Juniors had a short drill before going off for sports.

At approximately 5.35pm, the company had closing parade. The rain poured again just after 5 minutes the company close. The band council meeting was the last program for the day which started at 7pm.

SMKTD drill practice

MUAHAHAHA time for another dose my dear readers of another blog entry from Kent =D
Well first things first... SMKTD DRILL TEAM YOU STINK!!!!
have I got your attention yet? okok the statement above is just a joke =P so dont belasah me when you see me ^^". Aite.. first of all goodjob and congratulations SMKTD drill team upon completing your drill sequence *whoo hoo giv em a round of applause*. I'm awed by your determination and perseverance, not only the NCO's but also certain members of the team displayed great leadership and cooperation essential to the team's success.

Let us all thank pvt Wong Hoe Shing for single-handedly coming up with all the formations *I salute you!!Long live privates!! =P* not to forget L/cpl Ng Jiehan for taking attendance every practice without fail, and to L/cpl Ho Yew Hon for helping on commanding at certain times, and not to forget all the corporals for encouraging words to the team and for running the show, not to mention Corporal Steve Ong and Sgt Lim Han Sheng for coming and helping the drill team, and of course thank ME la duh!! *kidding haha*. Despite 3rdKL's members are famous for being unpunctual and always late to send in something, I believe that the drill team has done outstandingly well and has finished the formations ahead of schedule *now all that's left is to polish up on timing and basic drill*.

Even with rain beating down, the drill team continued practicing *dont worry la I was in the rain with em XD* an impresive display of perseverence and the will to complete the sequence as soon as possible, the determination to make a mark at the zon-bangsar competition, the encouragment from each other to fuel the desire of the victors cup. This is... ladies and gentlemen the mighty band of brothers and these boys have been practicing real hard... and guess what? they have FUN doing it. They know even if they dont win, they have something much better then the trophy, they still have each other, the strong bonds of brotherhood in Christ and they also have ME!! joking la XD I meant NEXT year.

But on the downside *Corporals please take-note* attendence is never 100% and some members just dont know when to be playful or serious. Not to mention the occasional bickering amongst the NCOs.... OKOK photos time ^^".

YEA that's the spirit practice hard!! Dont mind the rain ;)

Members working along with NCOs very good cooperation

Erm... I did mention that we have fun rite?..rite??

A salute to you guys and once again welldone and goodluck. To all those people wondering why a person with high drill qualifications *chey.. XD* like me isnt joining in... well I have reasons of my own of which I rather keep to myself ;) until next time....

oh ya and 1 more thing... smoking kills ;)
Cheers
Kent

Total: 98 Presents, 12 Excuses, 17 Absent

Parade Report

The band started late because of miss communication among leaders that’s no band practice because of SMK Taman Desa Awards Day, and the person in-charge did not bring the band room key along.

After opening parade we had our singspiration lead B2 squad leader Cpl Ong, he sang me a birthday song(TQ?) but I get beaten up by 50++ members.

After that, we have award briefing by W/O Ng, and a reminder about we already pass the deadline to pass up our membership fees & form.

Then we have drill practice, as usual SMK Taman Desa School Drill had their own practice but everyone looks blur. I would like to give a big thanks to Lcpl Tay & Cpl Tiang for helping me up to train the recruits for drill while I need to go for GJC creative drill.

We had our closing parade after drill section at 5.45pm.

Personal Opinion
Any person also should not get beaten up by any people some more BB members likes to hit the birthday boy just because he is birthday, didn’t give any present some more hit that person, what kind of discipline is this 3rd KL boys !? … for 7 April 2007 is ok but future I will make sure this kind thing will not happen anymore!! Because this is not the right habits and its show BB members not discipline at all.

Extra

Some of the members went to Dataran Merdeka for the Kuala Lumpur State School Band Competition after BB parade.

The 3rd KL Insignia

It is unknown if 3rd KL previously ever had a logo of it's own (other than the BB logo, of course). Sometime late 2006, we decided to come up with a company insignia (means: emblem or logo).

A proposed copy was drawn up by Mr. Terence Tay, a former 3rd KL officer currently serving full time at BBHQ. The design was put in reserve while several other proposed designs were drawn up as well. In the end, the officers council adopted Terence's design, making a few adjustments, namely the colour from light blue to red.

The insignia's red triangle design is modeled after the YMCA's logo, as 3rd KL is sponsored by the YMCA in Kuala Lumpur. The triangle also suits the n0. 3 as it has three angels (tri), an excellent representation of the company's number. The BB emblem, obviously represents Hebrews 6:19 which states "..which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast.."

It's futuristic looks represents the company's commitment and flexibility to changes in time and will continue to remain dedicated to the a Boys' well being.
A logo not only functions as a symbol for an organization, but also helps non-3rd KL members easily identify one of our Boys easily. An insignia also carries an amount of status and recognition among others, therefore, its not merely a logo but an item of respect and dignity. In the military every unit/company has it's own insignia, as well as the battalion, task force, all the way up the the country's battle of arms. It is only rightful that 3rd Kuala Lumpur Company, being a company of more than 50 years old, also has an insignia of its own. Therefore, we present you with the official insignia of the 3rd Kuala Lumpur Company of the Boys' Brigade in Malaysia.

Parade Report
This week the first bach of recruits came for their first parade. They reached YMCA at around 11am. There were 19 new recruits. Around 12pm. Cpl Wong Hoe Kit briefly introduced the band instruments to the recruits. After that, they had games session conducted by LCpl Ng Jiehan. Cpl Wong Hoe Kit, together with squad A2, conducted singspiration. The recruits were asked to introduce themselves during this time. Because of the recruits and lack of officer for that day, CE and Awards were cancelled. During drill time, the whole company bas been divided into two groups, those who join the Zon Bangsar Drill Team, and those who are otherwise. The Zon Bangsar Drill Team has decided to go for drill practice despite the rain. After about 15-20 minutes, the drill tam members are asked to go to Hibiscus 2. WO Ng Yee Khai explained to the team the reason of having drill in the rain. It's for us to train ourselves to march in the rain. Example: how fast/slow do you need to march while you are on a wet/dry ground? Unfortunately, Pte. Chen Yuen Sheng's phone and wallet was stole sometime during parade, only realizing it went missing after he left it in the toilet. Closing was conducted by WO. Kenny Voon.

WO. Voon's Twisted Tips for Promotion

Listed here are some of my suggestions of how to get promoted, and does not represent the opinions of the officers council and the BB. Ultimately, following these tips does not garuantee a spot for promotion although the author feels these advices, should, be quite effective.

The Officers are always on the look out for leaders among a group of people. But what are the things that officers look at? Here is a guide for all of you which might gain you a stripe or two!

Core requirements :
- About 85% attendance during parades - If you are missing half the time, chances are you won't know what is going on. It is not probable that one can function effectively as a leader when he is always missing!
- Involvement in most BB functions - same reasons apply above, but with involvement in more functions means more experience which is crucial for leadership.
- Be Responsible - When you're in charge of something.. don't bail out. It will only minus trust on you. When something has been given to you, finish it and gain the respect.
- Outspoken and/or outgoing - Is it logical to think that officers will notice someone who has not done anything to highlight himself in the first place? A quiet and shallow guy cannot get the attention of the officers. When one is outspoken or outgoing or both, and if he behaves positively with his actions, the person will naturally gain the respect from his peers and officers.
- Shine in every BB program - This involves badgework, band, singspiration, drill and any other program. This is just to show you are capable of doing things properly which are signs of leadership.

Standard Requirements
- Must greet officers (and NCOs). This is to gain attention and make them know you exist. It is also to prove you're polite and friendly. Don't think that walking pass an officer without greeting him means he didn't see you - he always does. By not greeting him, you are only drawing negative attention to yourself. So it is either positive.. or negative attention.. should you greet or not.
- Must be enthusiatic with every aspect of the programs - everyone likes a person when he is fired up for a programme. That fire will influence others to do the same. These are aspects of a leader. On the other hand, if one shows a negative attitude, complaining all the time and refusing to coorporate, that will only draw negative attention onto yourself.
- Give constructive advise about an event - Everyone can talk and comment, but how is the tone? Is the advise constructive? An advise if presented with the wrong tone (bossy, arrogant) is not effective, eventhough it maybe constructive. People will tend to listen a someone when they give comments in a respectable tone. When they listen, you'll have successfully drawn your attention and gain positive respect - more if the comment works.
- Knowing your squad members and officers - It is obvious that you should make the officer know about what you do for the company, because if he doesn't, how can there be reason for them to promote you if they don't know what you do? Knowing your squad members is just a genuiene act to befriend them.. a way of gaining respect and support.

Mega Points for Promotion
- Organize an event. This doens't necesarily need to be BB functions. This is to prove to the Officers that you're capable of handling and organizing something big. Officers know it is not easy to cordinate an event as there are many things to handle. If the event is successful, it usually means you're able to juggle the situation effectively. An event also works with many people. It would mean you've shown abilitiy in delegating responsibility.
- Initiative. Initiative is defined as "not waiting for someone to tell you to do something, but acting on your own with few or minimal influence from anyone". Most leaders SHOULD be initiative (despite saying that some are 'outspoken leaders and some 'follower leaders').

Extra Points
- Make friends with BB members from outside the company.
- Excel in programs outside BB as well. For example, pursue club positions in school like president of the chess club, etc.
- Be very good in studies.

Effective, but not recommended
- "Polish the Officers Shoe" - This is the laziest but one of the most effective ways for promotion. It only requires you to pretend in fron of the officers. For example, when the officer is not present.. do whatever you want. But when the officer shows up, pretend to be a leader, carry chairs around, serve drinks to the officer, follow him for a movie and so on. Although this method is proven to work, it is not recommended as it'll only draw negative attention from your peers and should you, undeservingly get promoted and the others who deserve not get it, it will cause a mass resignation.
- Getting your dad to donate RM1000 to the company. This automatically draws the officers attention on you for a moderate period of time. It is not recommended as it might draw negative speculation that your parents bribed the officers for your promotion (this is not possible as BB is a Christian organization which does not conform to these things). However, it does highlight you and probably help the officers notice your otherwise unnoticed potential.

Somethings That Will NOT Get You Promoted.
- The opposite of everything above.
- Complaining for nothing.
- Being a puppet, coming in and out of the company with no certainty of a future.
- Only hoping for a promotion, but not doing anything about it.
- Having a bad reputation with everyone.
- Getting caught in a lie.

Hope this helps.

Being good to others

Life is meant to be enjoyable for you and others. Rules for games are often made so everyone is treated fairly and everyone has a chance to enjoy themselves. Try to think of playing by the ‘rules of life’.

Do this quiz every now and again to see how well you are going. Answer (T) True; (F) False; or (S) Sometimes.

I am quick to help a friend who needs help.
I offer help to someone who needs it, even if I’m not so keen on or I don’t know them.
I try to speak first to someone who is new to BB. I can think of 3 things
I did for someone this week without being asked. I am respectful to others.
I never speak unkindly about others.
I like to cheer someone up who is feeling sad.
I don’t get very upset when I don’t get my own way.
I can share my things happily with others.
I try to talk to people that don’t seem to fit in.

Think of others as you want them to think about you. Say only things about others that you want others to say about you. Don’t behave in ways that hurt or might hurt others. Be brave to be good. People will like you better that way.

Telling others about BB
You are one of the lucky ones—you are already in the B.B.— but what about your friends at school, Sunday School and other Boys who live near you? They would enjoy themselves too, if you brought them along to the next time your Section meets. This is how Brigade keeps on growing - friends telling friends about it.

My first BB Asia Academy

I attended the BB Asia Academy which was held in Cameron Highlands from the 10-14th November 2006. BB officers and members from all over Asia attended.. the Phillipines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia and or course - Malaysia, with members from 1st JB, 1st Sibu, 1st Bukit Mertajam, 6th KL, 12th KL and 3rd. This event was organized by Mr. Lawrence, who is also the BB Asia Executive Secretary, together with help from the staff from BBM HQ. I have to admit that initially the thought of attending this academy never crossed my mind and when they my other officers asked me to go I was a little relunctant at first. But, boy.. thank God for persuasive people.

Day 1

We gathered in BBHQ at about 12pm. We were having lunch at Mr. Peter Yap's place before that. We left HQ after some final adjustments, seeked the Lords protection and took off north towards Ipoh. Two vehicles were used, Mr. Terence drove his Myvi and HQ rented a van with Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Eric in it. We had a stop for gas at the Sungai Buloh rest stop, when a slight problem occured. It seemed like petrol was leaking from the rented van and all the situation begun to look really gream. Fortunately it was just an overflow and we were on our way again. I was pretty much the operator and hands free kit for Mr. Terence who had incoming calls throughout the journey. Of course we had a fun time talking about all sorts of things. Other than the stop in Sungai Buloh, we had only one additional stop for a toilet break, and it's all the way up to Chefoo.

Cameron Highlands wasn't really a nice place for sight seeing.. at least the town isn't. The countryside is still pretty good.. and the air and coolness is similar to that of Genting and Frasers.. being at a high altitude. Cameron's is at the turnoff from Tapah, which is about 2 hours from KL. It takes another hour to navigate the whindy roads to Cameron's. It was an uneventful drive and we reached Chefoo Methodist Center at around 4.30pm.

We begun unloading and setting up the moment we arrived. The other officers were busy making arrangements for the delegates through registration and other matters while I was busy setting up the PA in the hall where all the classes will be held.

Only a handful of people arrived before us from Bukit Mertajam and Singapore. 1st JB was the first to arrive after us. Once they've checked in their NCO's, who were on worship duty that night, begun assisting me with the PA and other technicalities. I have to say that they were highly efficient and dispelled whatever stereotypes and impressions I had of the company before this event.

As preparations were still being carried out into the night, more delegates started to arrive, particular the ones from overseas. One of the flights were delayed and as a result a whole batch of attendees were an behind time. Most of them arrived after dinner. Later on they revealed to us another reason why they were delayed.

Worship was led by the 1st JB members who sang a mixture of Indonesian and English songs. It was indeed a great joy to see so many people of different nationalities praising God. It was a good effort by the two 1st JB sergeants as well, both girls. You can tell that at least one of them was very nervous. Thank God everything went smoothly. We also prayed for those who were still on their way up to Camerons, it was raining heavily and the roads were more dangerous to drive on.

After worship, all of us were introduced to the organizers of this event. The principal of the BB Asia Academy was Mr. Lim K. Tham, the former Executive Secretary for BB Singapore. He briefed us of what to expect from the course and that maintaining a positive attitude is the key to making this event successful. Following Mr. K. Tham's briefing, he briefly introduced Mr. Lawrence, who is the BB Asia full-time-to-be executive secretary.

The session was concluded by Reverend Richrard Tok, who came straight from the bus without enough time even to check in, gave a message and vesper. He then revealed to the rest of us that the bus was delayed due to a series of landslides which occured on the way up to Camerons.

After vesper, supper was prepared for all.. and it was bed time for most of us. The HQ staff were still awake late into the night preparing for the Academy's launch the next day. I had my share of sleeplessness as well.. as I was up fixing up the PA.. which never seemed to work well due to the PA's setup in the hall. Once that was done, it was a nice hot shower and lights out for a satisfying first day. I haven't met any solid new friends yet, except Cpl. Chung Wee and Sgt. Christopher from 1st JB, but I'm sure I'll get a chance in the next 4 days.

Day 2

As usual, I had a slight problem waking up in the morning, but it was better than most occasions. I really thank Joseph Loy from BB Singapore for giving me a wake up call.. if not I would've late to open up the hall for the worship team to practice. Since I was by default responsible for the equipment in the hall. So after a quite teeth brushing I was off to the hall.

Breafast was a plain continental set.. one of my favourites. We had our day cut out for us, with opening cermony right after worship. I changed into my uniform early.. which my red jacket as the second layer. It was aircond cold up in Cameron's. To launch this year's BB Asia Academy, we have Dr. M. Kayvaes, a minister in the Prime Ministers department and a former BB Photobucket - Video and Image Hostingmember from 4th KL.

After a photo session, a short tea break, the academy begun. Mr. Robinson did a session on programme idea. Later on Mr. Lim K. Tham did another session on BB Philosophy, Culture and Traditions. He basically talked about BB Asia and what the goals of the BB ministries of the world have in common.. which is to commit to the BB Object, something which is also emphasised by Mr. Robinson earlier on. The goal of BB should be focused on 2 parts and for us as BB officers have two callings. The first is an evangelical calling, where we're called to bring forth the Good News through the BB movement to those whom do not know Him. The other is the basically the development of character.

Most of us were looking forward to the programme at night.. which was a visit to the Cameron's pasar malam down in town. Unfortunately, during dinner.. there was a moderate shower which spoiled the plan.. as we were supposed to walk down to town. So, instead of the night market Mr. Lawrence conducted a games session for us. After vesper and sharing it was the end of Day 2.

Day 3

The next day started pretty much the same way like the second.. except for breakfast. It was to be sunrise service out in the open... unfortunately for some reason we decided to have it indoors instead. Reverend Raymond Sim led the morning's sunrise service, spoke of Taming the Tongue and emphasised how all of us in the Brigade ministry should learn to work togther and not criticize each others differences.

Most of the days sessions are conducted by Mr. Timothy Tan, a former 2nd Penang Boy. He speicializes in training leaders in well known corporations and MNCs, where work sometimes takes him overseas for training. I remember him mentioning he did a session for MYOB.. that big Australian Accounting IT Software company... wow.

I guess the what made his sessions interesting was how relevant he was towards the current trends. He was not afraid to speak his mind.. sometimes using "semi-foul" words for effect.. but never failing to apologize when he realizes he's crossed the line.

Usually, I'll be quite reluctant to participate in an ice-breaker or a game.. However, his approace made it quite enjoyable.

There was this game, which was basically "one, two, juice".. but with an additional twist to it. Initially, everyone starts as an egg. Those who win the first round will move on to become a chicken while the loser remains an egg. Only characters with a similar character can challenge one another. So, in the next level.. after a chicken-chicken duel, the victor will move on to become a dinosour.. while the loser is demoted back to an egg. The same process then Photobucket - Video and Image Hostingcontinues.. dino versus dino. The victor will become an Immortal, while the loser will be demoted back to a chicken. Ultimately, as it turns out, there can be only one egg, one chicken, one dino.. while everyone else would end up as immortals.

It was quite a scene seeing so many adults playing a game like this.. and right from the start i had a bad feeling where I would end up. I had a 10 time loosing streak.. and the furtherest i got to was a dino.. just a step away from being normal. As the game progress... more and more ppl were left standing in their immortal poses while I was stuck at the other various lower levelled positions. And guess what... I was the EGG! The lowest of the lot.... arghhh... how embarassing.. =.=". But the game was fun, and I got a big bar of kitkat for it which on one else had (other than the chicken and dino).

Remaining days:

Well, we basically had a wonderful time of fellowship. I'm glad I came and got to know many friends from all over, particularly Joseph Loy from 30th Singapore and members from 1st Johor Bahru (Chung Wee, Christopher, Siau Wen, Slyvia, Hellen, Peih Ling, Michelle and others who were friendly enough to approach a weirdo guy like me =P. I'm sure our friendship will last as long as we have the Anchor as part of our souls.

Interesting Article

Hi, I thought I'd share this - taken from BBA Website..

BB is Unique. For contemporary local church work with young people, the biggest challenge is not attracting young people, but helping those who identify as Christians to be committed long-term as fruitful followers of Christ beyond their young life. Long-term results are rarely achieved without long-term work. With that, Brigade is uniquely placed, as it is the only local church children's and youth Christian framework that offers consistent long-term intensive training that spans the entire school-age life of a young person. While recognising whatever age they are and the capabilities they have, BB constantly encourages and supports them to always keep developing further in all areas of their lives. This makes BB relevant and attractive to all (those inside and outside the church).

Our movement's biggest challenge today is communicating why we should continue to exist and what we actually offer to our world. With so many other groups adopting techniques pioneered in BB (small group structure, camping, leadership development programs, mentoring), many believe that only trivial surface details like what we wear, how we stand and walk, and what we call each other are the things that justify why we should exist. By not being clear about who we are and what we offer, many find it difficult to support our work (especially when there are so many other 'competing' programs that also need support).

So next time someone in the church asks what is BB - don't say a Christian version of scouts, or an uniformed youth group - tell them:"BB is about long-term training for long-term results - for young people to lead and impact their world (with God's kingdom)."Remember no other widespread Christian young people work is intentionally and actively working long-term like Brigade is.Keep up the great work in your continued efforts and desire to advance God's kingdom.

A Lesson in Cleanliness

It was during closing parade when an unusual sight, in an unusual place for fall-out occured. Imagine approximately 100 people cramming themselves in the tight spaces of the YMCA lounge.. so much so till some of them had to move along the pathway area to do their push-ups. Why the push-ups? Well.. some smart "behinds/donkeys" left their foods and drink packages in the hall. Sergeant Hooi Chin Gian finally decided to do something about it. It's very weird to have this culture going on with our members. It's just a matter of looking for a rubbish bin an throwing it in.

Anyway, the grandtotal was 40 push-ups. 10 for every rubbish recovered. As though doing push up's in that tight area wasn't bad enough.. the Sergeant gave a countdown - 10 seconds to get on the floor and kick off the push ups.

Well.. hopefully the BB will be able to instill civic culture in our Boys.. where else are they going to learn? In Malaysia... the adults too are doing it. Well... that's not gonna happen in 3rd KL. At least not with a few push-ups everytime that happens..

Drill Squad

Many BB members dislike drill most , among all the weekly BB activities.

However, drill can actually be fun without compromising discipline. If someone in the drill team makes a mistake, we do not laugh at him. We laugh with him. When we encounter a complicated drill command, we learn to brainstorm our way through, covering up for each and everyone of our team members too! Remember the purposes of learning drill.

In fact, it was DRILL that gave the founder inspiration to found BB. Sir Smith was thinking how he could use DRILL to control grown up men but couldn't do anything to control the boys in sunday school. Therefore, he got the idea to found BB. So, remember, DRILL is an important part in every BB boy's life.

To all the new privates, hope you all can learn to find fun during drill. Not the "free and easy" kind of fun, but the "fun of working in a team" . Sweat together, Enjoy together.
