Hello dear readers and fellow Boys' Brigade member, this is Mr. Goh writting for the first time on this Blog, LoL(Hahahahahahaha!!!) XD. Hmmm, I wonder how many BB boys have already forgotten who I am. Anyway, just for those who do not know my current status, I am in Arizona, USA right now. Why? For study laaa, what else X) Which Uni? NAU which stands for Northern Arizona University :) When did I leave? Last month on the 14th of August. So far I am GOOD :) I have friends from almost all over the world, Africa, Switzerland, China, Philippines, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, USA, New Zealand, Australians and so on. The weather here is starting to get really cold ESPECIALLY WHEN THE WIND BLOWS X)and in 3 months time I be getting Snow Yaaaa JoY XD. As for food, I get to eat CHEESE pizza, CHEESE burger, CHEESE sandwich, CHEESE, CHEESE, CHEESE and more CHEESE!!!! almost everything there is to eat I will find cheese in it. I am gonna get FAT. The size of the campus is BIG compared to Inti College Subang Jaya. However some of the seniors commented that NAU campus compared to other Campus around the States, ours is medium size. Imagine that O.O If you like sight seeing and if you ever get the chance to see the Grand Canyon, I say go for it :) you may have heard people saying/ claiming that the Grand Canyon is just a GIGANTIC/ENORMOUS/ REALLY REALLY REALLY big hole, which is true but the Sight and the feeling you get when you see it for the first time is undescribable..

Well, that all I got to say for now. Stay In School and Stay In BB X)

After whole day of training boys during parade yet received so many complains, after whole day with small kids yet have to wait till every single of them went home then only can leave,after whole day of unsatisfication(some call it 'tak puas-ness') and yet have to smile to each members. In between of all this, a missunderstood occurs to this two officers(top there), they run out of thoughts and come to a situation where they have to settle it face to face with MAN's way! This is the only way to show and proff that which are the most MAN. They belive that this is the only way gain back trust from others and gain contentment.

Who will be the winner? One is TALL! WELL BUILDED! The other one is SMART! TRICKY!

My Review of 8th Penang Company

I’ve always been interested in seeing how companies operate. Since a young age I’ve been visiting other companies in KL-Selangor which were within my reach (often times without Captains notice and sometimes results me in being late for my own parade). My curiosity lies in how differently other companies run their programmes, company size and general dynamics of the company – what makes them tick. These same fascinations lead me to Penang where I visited the 8th Penang Company.

Penang is the birthplace of the Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia. The company I visited was the 8th Penang Company based in Chung Ling (Government) Secondary School, Penang. It’s a relatively new BB school base about 10 years old or so. The company itself has consistently been one of the better companies in Penang (based on their track record over the years). Right next door is the other Chung Ling (Private) which only recently has become the platoon for 16th Penang (or was it 18th Penang? Hmm) BB is the second biggest group in Chung Ling, loosing out only to the scouts. They also have a strong reputation with footdrill being placed high during the 2003 Pesta being the 1st Runner up. Chung Ling is also one of the top schools in Penang. Its size was bigger than my college (Taylor’s College)!

8th Penang’s other schools includes SMK Air Itam (and one or two I can’t remember..). Each “platoon” has a reasonable size of 80 active members. (note: Their term platoon represents a school base in comparison to 3rd KL’s platoon, whereby a platoon is simply a section comprising a few squads.). When combined during Enrolment Service at the Air Itam Chinese Methodist Church and Founders Day when the whole company gathers as one their number easily exceed 300 members. Remember that this is an all Boys company. In comparison to 1st JB, the largest company on Peninsula Malaysia which has a membership of 300 members as well (also has 3 school platoons), 1st JB comprise of girls as well. This makes 8th Penang Company, technically, the biggest company on West Malaysia. There’s also an active Girls’ Brigade company attached to the church and school which has a mutual relationship with the BB.

Sounds all good doesn’t it? Now here’s the catch. They meet from 8-10.30am, only 12 times a year. Apparently, that’s normal for most of the companies in Penang (in comparison a typical KL company meet for 5-6 hours, which meets non-stop all year round with 40-52 weeks), 3rd KL being 12.30-5.45pm if you’re in Senior Section. Apparently they don’t even have time to conduct badge work and relies on Awards Camp to cover their syllabus all in only a few days. I’ve not been able to see their normal parade as they were practicing how to do recruitment drive, but it’ll be interesting to see how they maintain the level of interest in their Boys within such a limited amount of time. The reason for their time limitations are because of school regulations which disallows BB and all other uniform groups to meet beyond a certain amount of time.

This was a reminder to me of how blessed we are in 3rd KL. We complain that we don’t have enough time for anything. Some of us resign, some of us give up, some of us say we are doing too much and so on. But our Brothers in Penang are going through a huge difficulty with time constraints and they have the desire to expand their range of activities but are not able to. Perhaps we should learn how to appreciate what we have and make full use of our time rather than complain.

I also had much to learn from their Captain, Mr. Teh Gim Beng. During his time, he was the youngest Captain in Malaysia (the year he was appointed, not a record, but still young). When I first met him (I didn’t know he was the Captain then), he was very friendly, humble and extremely approachable guy. No wonder his member look up to him. Nowadays, a lot of people with authority are quite snobbish and full of pride (yep, sadly in BB too). All the Boys from his batch are now the ones running the show where all of them are only in their early 30s.

My visit of the 8th Penang Company was indeed an eye opener. Towards the end of parade there was a Boy who approach his awards officer to have his craft (now Arts Badge) project assessed. It reminded me again that although we’re geographically far apart, we’re actually the same in nature. BB’s about building people up.

3rd November 2007 - Company Parade

The day started off with the bandsman test by Captain Tan and Miss Foo. The test started around 9 and was followed by the usual band practice. At 2 25 p.m. while I was having a squad meeting with B1, I was informed that I will be the NCO in charge for the parade. Being briefed merely minutes before the real deal, I almost panicked because it was my very first time doing in it. In addition, I had a minor sore throat. Against all odds I took the challenge (thank God the officer in charge was Mr. Jason =).Singsparation was conducted by Corporal Wong Hoe Kit on behalf of squad C2 which I felt went on successfully. Then members broke off for Christian Education and awards. Drill was basically the same weekly routine. This time around, the drill squad was divided into two groups lead by two Drill basic holders, LCpl Cham Kwan Weng and LCpl Khoo Ming Yuan. They were assigned to take over their respective squads for a couple of weeks. Next was the closing parade. The tension eased a little during closing even though I was still slightly nervous. Then a few of us stayed back for basketball until dusk.

10th November 2007 - Company Parade

Today’s parade stated as usual with the band. However many people (including officers) came late due to the rain which caused the traffic jam. This traffic jam isn’t the normal one because there is a riot at Dataran Merdeka. We were advised by the officers not to wear yellow today.

The band practiced a few songs which will be played at Medan for the company trip. We had our practice at the Dojo and the hall from 12.30pm to 2.00pm.Then it was time for opening at 2.30pm after ‘resting’ a while. The attendance was 65 present 20 excused and the rest absent. There were also some ‘ghost’ members because their names are in the squad list but they are often missing in action. The singspiration is led by the primers. However right after beginning to enjoy the song the whole thing (computer and projector) went down and we ended up playing taking off our boots and shoes and putting them on again.

Christian Education was cancelled todaybecause many of the instructors were busy or late. The award class continued as usual. Then it was drill time. As many were late the previous week all the Boys came very early for drill. As a result all of them were early for drill. After drill, it was time for closing parade.

All this didn’t end the parade many had to stay back for the Medan trip meeting and it ended at about 7.10pm
