Since a young age I’ve been visiting other companies in KL-Selangor which were within my reach (often times without Captains notice and sometimes results me in being late for my own parade). My curiosity lies in how differently other companies run their programmes, company size and general dynamics of the company – what makes them tick. These same fascinations lead me to Penang where I visited the 8th Penang Company.

Penang is the birthplace of the Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia. The company I visited was the 8th Penang Company based in Chung Ling (Government) Secondary School, Penang. It’s a relatively new BB school base about 10 years old or so. The company itself has consistently been one of the better companies in Penang (based on their track record over the years). Right next door is the other Chung Ling (Private) which only recently has become the platoon for 16th Penang (or was it 18th Penang? Hmm) BB is the second biggest group in Chung Ling, loosing out only to the scouts. They also have a strong reputation with footdrill being placed high during the 2003 Pesta being the 1st Runner up. Chung Ling is also one of the top schools in Penang. Its size was bigger than my college (Taylor’s College)!

8th Penang’s other schools includes SMK Air Itam (and one or two I can’t remember..). Each “platoon” has a reasonable size of 80 active members. (note: Their term platoon represents a school base in comparison to 3rd KL’s platoon, whereby a platoon is simply a section comprising a few squads.). When combined during Enrolment Service at the Air Itam Chinese Methodist Church and Founders Day when the whole company gathers as one their number easily exceed 300 members. Remember that this is an all Boys company. In comparison to 1st JB, the largest company on Peninsula Malaysia which has a membership of 300 members as well (also has 3 school platoons), 1st JB comprise of girls as well. This makes 8th Penang Company, technically, the biggest company on West Malaysia. There’s also an active Girls’ Brigade company attached to the church and school which has a mutual relationship with the BB.

Sounds all good doesn’t it? Now here’s the catch. They meet from 8-10.30am, only 12 times a year. Apparently, that’s normal for most of the companies in Penang (in comparison a typical KL company meet for 5-6 hours, which meets non-stop all year round with 40-52 weeks), 3rd KL being 12.30-5.45pm if you’re in Senior Section. Apparently they don’t even have time to conduct badge work and relies on Awards Camp to cover their syllabus all in only a few days. I’ve not been able to see their normal parade as they were practicing how to do recruitment drive, but it’ll be interesting to see how they maintain the level of interest in their Boys within such a limited amount of time. The reason for their time limitations are because of school regulations which disallows BB and all other uniform groups to meet beyond a certain amount of time.

This was a reminder to me of how blessed we are in 3rd KL. We complain that we don’t have enough time for anything. Some of us resign, some of us give up, some of us say we are doing too much and so on. But our Brothers in Penang are going through a huge difficulty with time constraints and they have the desire to expand their range of activities but are not able to. Perhaps we should learn how to appreciate what we have and make full use of our time rather than complain.

I also had much to learn from their Captain, Mr. Teh Gim Beng. During his time, he was the youngest Captain in Malaysia (the year he was appointed, not a record, but still young). When I first met him (I didn’t know he was the Captain then), he was very friendly, humble and extremely approachable guy. No wonder his member look up to him. Nowadays, a lot of people with authority are quite snobbish and full of pride (yep, sadly in BB too). All the Boys from his batch are now the ones running the show where all of them are only in their early 30s.

My visit of the 8th Penang Company was indeed an eye opener. Towards the end of parade there was a Boy who approach his awards officer to have his craft (now Arts Badge) project assessed. It reminded me again that although we’re geographically far apart, we’re actually the same in nature. The test started around 9 and was followed by the usual band practice. At 2 25 p.m. while I was having a squad meeting with B1, I was informed that I will be the NCO in charge for the parade. Being briefed merely minutes before the real deal, I almost panicked because it was my very first time doing in it. In addition, I had a minor sore throat. Against all odds I took the challenge (thank God the officer in charge was Mr. Jason =).Singsparation was conducted by Corporal Wong Hoe Kit on behalf of squad C2 which I felt went on successfully. Then members broke off for Christian Education and awards. Drill was basically the same weekly routine. This time around, the drill squad was divided into two groups lead by two Drill basic holders, LCpl Cham Kwan Weng and LCpl Khoo Ming Yuan. They were assigned to take over their respective squads for a couple of weeks. Next was the closing parade. The tension eased a little during closing even though I was still slightly nervous. Then a few of us stayed back for basketball until dusk.

WELL IN THE END IT’S THE EXPIRIENCE THAT COUNTS = )

Report by,

LCpl Dhanvi Lakshman

10th November 2007 - Company Parade

Today’s parade stated as usual with the band. However many people (including officers) came late due to the rain which caused the traffic jam. This traffic jam isn’t the normal one because there is a riot at Dataran Merdeka. We were advised by the officers not to wear yellow today.

The band practiced a few songs which will be played at Medan for the company trip. We had our practice at the Dojo and the hall from 12.30pm to 2.00pm.Then it was time for opening at 2.30pm after ‘resting’ a while. The attendance was 65 present 20 excused and the rest absent. There were also some ‘ghost’ members because their names are in the squad list but they are often missing in action. The singspiration is led by the primers. However right after beginning to enjoy the song the whole thing (computer and projector) went down and we ended up playing taking off our boots and shoes and putting them on again.

Christian Education was cancelled todaybecause many of the instructors were busy or late. The award class continued as usual. Then it was drill time. As many were late the previous week all the Boys came very early for drill. As a result all of them were early for drill. After drill, it was time for closing parade.

All this didn’t end the parade many had to stay back for the Medan trip meeting and it ended at about 7.10pm

Report by
LCpl Khoo Ming Yuan

A normal meeting day with a few surprises

The day started off with band practice as usual at 12.00pm, I wasn't there so I don't know what happened. The NCO in-charge for the day was me, Corporal Ignatius Goh (buahahahaha XD, didn't do for long time already so was a bit nervous :p) The attendance for the day was 80 present, 13 excuse and 30 absent (considered below average by my standards) Next was Singsparation lead by Corporal Wong Hoe Kit, which i find was a bit zombie like, partly because SOMEBODY couldn't make in and informed Corporal Wong late. In other news, SOMEBODY with an American accent is BACK. That somebodies name starts with a C.. He is none other then Sergenat Hooi Chin Gian He is as Energetic, and Crazy(in a good way Xp) as ever. Next, Bible Study, which went on smoothly as always. Followed by Awards, currently we are conducting Target class for all the freshies, Computer Knowledge Class;both basic and advance(which by the way is massive just ask Primer Tan Kok Yau) and Safety Class; Basic (taught by me, buahahahahaha XD) and Advance by Primer Sanjay(aka SANJAYA!! XD) and primer Sim. Next, Drill class, today we announced the results of the last test (basic paying Complement) mostly passed but to those who failed Don't Give Up!! This is merely an obstacle that God has put in front of you to improve yourself :) We had a really whacky Competition(created by our Captain) where the commanding boy is challenge to shout the name of their comrades in random arrangement in the shortest time possible. Objective of this challenge is Learn how to shout like a commander, know your friends name(ice-breaker), to build self confidence. (Hmm wonder if i missed out anything) The Winner of the Challenge was Lance Corporal Benjamin (YAY!!!). At about 6.00pm we had our closing parade. As usual, at the beginning of the parade was the announcements and reminders(Especially for the Medan trip fella's). Oh, just to let the world know Our Captain is gonna be a FATHER in February 2008(according to Mr.Tan) God Bless Mr. Tan, his family and 3rd KL company.

This is Corporal Ignatius Goh reporting.

Why Blog?

You may have visited this blog several times and wondered to yourselves.. why do we do this? Reports may sometimes seem to be a bureaucratic piece of nonsense but having a blog does serve a role in the new age and has a high note of relevancy today.
Let me share with you the vision of why I started this blog in the first place. First of all, it gives us a clear view of the past. At the moment 3rd KL has no idea of what has happened in the past. All records were either lost or never made in the first place. However, we are fortunate for officers like Paul Peter and former 3rd KL captain Peter Siew who has worked closely with Paul Judy, the Anchor Magazine editor of that time. If weren't for them we'd have absolutely no clue of 3rd KL's past. So, this whole concept - reports, news, videos, newsletters, etc are not just to display how active the company is, but also a history documentation where we can refer back to past strength's and weaknesses, hence improve of them. It's pretty much like writing a diary. If you have a diary or attempted one before, I'm sure it feels fun to reflect on what you've done in the past. The same concept applies here.

Apart from the formalities mentioned above, blogs also allow a certain funk. So I dare say, the more active a blog.. the more happening a company is.. especially when the majority of the members use the Internet. It reflects the enthusiasm each members shares towards making 3rd KL a better place to be. Or are we just people coming in and out of the company just hoping for something to happen? I guess the biggest problem with us is we forget that good things only can happen when we do something about it. Articles of a blog need not solely be reports or mention of events.. they are just part of it. Whatever is relevant to BB.. jokes.. pictures.. thoughts.. they all act as a medium of communication between individuals. In the end, this will help stimulate creativity, intellect and writing experience which will be helpful in life (which is one of the main reason why I'm encouraging you guys in the first place). In a sad company culture where very few of our members even have personal blogs.. Boots and Brasso can help spark the interest. So far, a handful of people have been inspired to start their own blogs such as LCpl. Alex Tan, but we need more people to cultivate this habit amongst themselves.

Sometimes people see blogs as an unprofessional and childish thing for organisations to have. Try logging on to the websites of big companies. Welcome to the real world, where the blogging/wiki concept is already in the latest management textbooks - they serve as a medium of communication. I hope you've seen the relevance of this topic and would contribute towards the effectiveness of this website. So please, help 3rd KL avoid turning this blog into another one of Voon's ramblings and make this blog the most happening one in BBM!

19th May 2007 - Company Parade

Present: 105
Excused : 12
Absent : 18

OIC : WO. Kept thinking if there was anything I missed out. There was so much I had to do and such.

Well, the parade started around 2.35pm. After opening parade with Anchor song and opening prayer we all gathered at the hall for A2's leading of the day. They sang a song with the company and played a game with them about passing a ball with their legs as the music goes on. It was kind of enjoying for most of them.

After leading from Squad A2, we had Bible study with Lt. Alan Yong leading. We discussed about why we are here in this Boys' Brigade. Then everyone moved to their own sections of our Golden Jubilee Musical practice after Bible study.

It was until 5.35pm everyone gathered back down at the basketball court for the closing parade. Attendance did change and it became more! haha...Band council was postphoned to next week and there is a performance for School Teachers' Day, lead by Corporal Wong Hoe Kit.
After closing, some Boys' looked for others for dinner, some others went for meetings. SMKTD Exco members were called for a short meeting to discuss a few problems. After that everyone went home.

by LCpl Kenny Ho Yew Hon

14th April 2007 - Company Parade

* This should be below the previous post... =P

On this day, I had my piano exam in the morning. After that, I received an SMS from Sgt. Lim requesting to swap duties for Sgt. Major. I was already running late, so I rushed home, polished up my uniform and headed for YMCA. I arrived about half an hour before band practice was over.

During squad meeting, attendance was not very encouraging, but for Parade, the attendance recorded is:

Present: 97
Excused: 15
Absent: 29

Before that, during squad meeting, only about 40-50 boys were downstairs for squad meeting. There seemed to be a certain lack of urgency to attend uniform inspection (sq. meeting) , or the boys are just afraid of the scorching sun. However, this attitude cannot be tolerated and should not be repeated in the future.

After an opening parade in unusually hot weather conditions, we moved into the hall for singspiration, followed by announcements .Then, we were split up into our separate sessions for Golden Jubilee practice. The band went down to do some marching practice, the juniors had their singing practice, while Cpl. Soo taught the recruits BB Knowledge component for their Target Badge. Then, the basketballers, creative drillers and recruits had their respective practices. Today, there was a bit of time wasted in between sessions partly due to the rain, the lack of urgency mentioned earlier and also partly due to the fact that the boys were not yet used to the new timetable for Golden Jubilee Rehearsals and needed some time to adjust.

After rehearsal was Drill time for seniors and then closing parade at around 5.40 p.m.

-Sgt. SMK Taman Desa drill team members had a camp the day before as preparation for the coming inter-school competition this coming week. The morning training lasted till around 10am and off to YMCA for band.

The weather was fine until opening parade at around 2.30pm when the showers began. All officers were present except for Mr. Tan and Mr. Lawrence who were up north in Penang for the Brigade Council Meeting (BCM). Mr. Yong was present for a while and had to leave because his newborn baby girl was sick (please pray for her). Opening parade was extended till around 3.05pm today due to certain habits such as being late/slow, leaving cups behind hoping that it walks to the dustbin and certain amount of lost and found items.

C2, the squad on duty led singspiration. A few announcements were made before we had another singing session. This time it was led by our very own Mr. Joe teaching our finale song for the Golden Jubilee Celebrations ‘I Just Can’t Stop The Music’.

Next was band for the seniors and dancing for the juniors. As for the recruits it was Target Badge class for them. SMK Taman Desa drillers had their run again while Sgt. Hooi led the remaining members during drill. Juniors had a short drill before going off for sports.

At approximately 5.35pm, the company had closing parade. The rain poured again just after 5 minutes the company close. SMKTD DRILL TEAM YOU STINK!!!!

have I got your attention yet? okok the statement above is just a joke =P so dont belasah me when you see me ^^". Aite.. first of all goodjob and congratulations SMKTD drill team upon completing your drill sequence *whoo hoo giv em a round of applause*. I'm awed by your determination and perseverance, not only the NCO's but also certain members of the team displayed great leadership and cooperation essential to the team's success.

Let us all thank pvt Wong Hoe Shing for single-handedly coming up with all the formations *I salute you!!Long live privates!! =P* not to forget L/cpl Ng Jiehan for taking attendance every practice without fail, and to L/cpl Ho Yew Hon for helping on commanding at certain times, and not to forget all the corporals for encouraging words to the team and for running the show, not to mention Corporal Steve Ong and Sgt Lim Han Sheng for coming and helping the drill team, and of course thank ME la duh!! *kidding haha*. Despite 3rdKL's members are famous for being unpunctual and always late to send in something, I believe that the drill team has done outstandingly well and has finished the formations ahead of schedule *now all that's left is to polish up on timing and basic drill*.

Even with rain beating down, the drill team continued practicing *dont worry la I was in the rain with em XD* an impresive display of perseverence and the will to complete the sequence as soon as possible, the determination to make a mark at the zon-bangsar competition, the encouragment from each other to fuel the desire of the victors cup. This is... ladies and gentlemen the mighty band of brothers and these boys have been practicing real hard... and guess what? they have FUN doing it. They know even if they dont win, they have something much better then the trophy, they still have each other, the strong bonds of brotherhood in Christ and they also have ME!! joking la XD I meant NEXT year.

But on the downside *Corporals please take-note* attendence is never 100% and some members just dont know when to be playful or serious. Not to mention the occasional bickering amongst the NCOs.... OKOK photos time ^^".<very>

YEA that's the spirit practice hard!! Because this is not the right habits and its show BB members not discipline at all.

Extra

Some of the members went to Dataran Merdeka for the Kuala Lumpur State School Band Competition after BB parade.

Attached are some of the picture:

Report by,

Cpl Soo Jie Cong

The 3rd KL Insignia

It is unknown if 3rd KL previously ever had a logo of it's own (other than the BB logo, of course). Sometime late 2006, we decided to come up with a company insignia (means: emblem or logo).

A proposed copy was drawn up by Mr. Terence Tay, a former 3rd KL officer currently serving full time at BBHQ. The design was put in reserve while several other proposed designs were drawn up as well. In the end, the officers council adopted Terence's design, making a few adjustments, namely the colour from light blue to red.

The insignia's red triangle design is modeled after the YMCA's logo, as 3rd KL is sponsored by the YMCA in Kuala Lumpur. The triangle also suits the n0. 3 as it has three angels (tri), an excellent representation of the company's number. The BB emblem, obviously represents Hebrews 6:19 which states "..which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast.."

It's futuristic looks represents the company's commitment and flexibility to changes in time and will continue to remain dedicated to the a Boys' well being.

A logo not only functions as a symbol for an organization, but also helps non-3rd KL members easily identify one of our Boys easily. An insignia also carries an amount of status and recognition among others, therefore, its not merely a logo but an item of respect and dignity. In the military every unit/company has it's own insignia, as well as the battalion, task force, all the way up the the country's battle of arms. It is only rightful that 3rd Kuala Lumpur Company, being a company of more than 50 years old, also has an insignia of its own. Therefore, we present you with the official insignia of the 3rd Kuala Lumpur Company of the Boys' Brigade in Malaysia.

10th February 2007 - Company Parade

Attendance
Officer: 6 presents
Senior - 40 Present, 27 Excused, 1 Absent
Primer - 6 Presents
Junior - 30 Presents,7 Absents
Recruit - 2 Presents

Total: 84 Presents, 27 Excuses, 8 Absents

Duty NCO - Cpl. Cpl Wong Hoe Kit, together with squad A2, conducted singspiration. The recruits were asked to introduce themselves during this time. Because of the recruits and lack of officer for that day, CE and Awards were cancelled. During drill time, the whole company bas been divided into two groups, those who join the Zon Bangsar Drill Team, and those who are otherwise. The Zon Bangsar Drill Team has decided to go for drill practice despite the rain. After about 15-20 minutes, the drill tam members are asked to go to Hibiscus 2. WO Ng Yee Khai explained to the team the reason of having drill in the rain. It's for us to train ourselves to march in the rain. Example: how fast/slow do you need to march while you are on a wet/dry ground? Unfortunately, Pte. Chen Yuen Sheng's phone and wallet was stole sometime during parade, only realizing it went missing after he left it in the toilet. Closing was conducted by WO. Voon's Twisted Tips for Promotion

Listed here are some of my suggestions of how to get promoted, and does not represent the opinions of the officers council and the BB. Ultimately, following these tips does not garuantee a spot for promotion although the author feels these advices, should, be quite effective.

The Officers are always on the look out for leaders among a group of people. But what are the things that officers look at? Here is a guide for all of you which might gain you a stripe or two!

Core requirements :
- About 85% attendance during parades - If you are missing half the time, chances are you won't know what is going on. It is not probable that one can function effectively as a leader when he is always missing!
- Involvement in most BB functions - same reasons apply above, but with involvement in more functions means more experience which is crucial for leadership.
- Be Responsible - When you're in charge of something.. don't bail out. It will only minus trust on you. When something has been given to you, finish it and gain the respect.
- Outspoken and/or outgoing - Is it logical to think that officers will notice someone who has not done anything to highlight himself in the first place? A quiet and shallow guy cannot get the attention of the officers. When one is outspoken or outgoing or both, and if he behaves positively with his actions, the person will naturally gain the respect from his peers and officers.
- Shine in every BB program - This involves badgework, band, singspiration, drill and any other program. This is just to show you are capable of doing things properly which are signs of leadership.

Standard Requirements
- Must greet officers (and NCOs). This is to gain attention and make them know you exist. It is also to prove you're polite and friendly. Don't think that walking pass an officer without greeting him means he didn't see you - he always does. By not greeting him, you are only drawing negative attention to yourself. So it is either positive.. or negative attention.. should you greet or not.
- Must be enthusiatic with every aspect of the programs - everyone likes a person when he is fired up for a programme. That fire will influence others to do the same. These are aspects of a leader. On the other hand, if one shows a negative attitude, complaining all the time and refusing to coorporate, that will only draw negative attention onto yourself.
- Give constructive advise about an event - Everyone can talk and comment, but how is the tone? Is the advise constructive? An advise if presented with the wrong tone (bossy, arrogant) is not effective, eventhough it maybe constructive. People will tend to listen a someone when they give comments in a respectable tone. When they listen, you'll have successfully drawn your attention and gain positive respect - more if the comment works.
- Knowing your squad members and officers - It is obvious that you should make the officer know about what you do for the company, because if he doesn't, how can there be reason for them to promote you if they don't know what you do? Knowing your squad members is just a genuiene act to befriend them.. a way of gaining respect and support.

Mega Points for Promotion
- Organize an event. This doens't necesarily need to be BB functions. This is to prove to the Officers that you're capable of handling and organizing something big. Officers know it is not easy to cordinate an event as there are many things to handle. If the event is successful, it usually means you're able to juggle the situation effectively. An event also works with many people. It would mean you've shown abilitiy in delegating responsibility.
- Initiative. Initiative is defined as "not waiting for someone to tell you to do something, but acting on your own with few or minimal influence from anyone". Most leaders SHOULD be initiative (despite saying that some are 'outspoken leaders and some 'follower leaders').

Extra Points
- Make friends with BB members from outside the company.
- Excel in programs outside BB as well. For example, pursue club positions in school like president of the chess club, etc.
- Be very good in studies.

Effective, but not recommended
- "Polish the Officers Shoe" - This is the laziest but one of the most effective ways for promotion. It only requires you to pretend in fron of the officers. For example, when the officer is not present.. do whatever you want. But when the officer shows up, pretend to be a leader, carry chairs around, serve drinks to the officer, follow him for a movie and so on. Although this method is proven to work, it is not recommended as it'll only draw negative attention from your peers and should you, undeservingly get promoted and the others who deserve not get it, it will cause a mass resignation.
- Getting your dad to donate RM1000 to the company. This automatically draws the officers attention on you for a moderate period of time. It is not recommended as it might draw negative speculation that your parents bribed the officers for your promotion (this is not possible as BB is a Christian organization which does not conform to these things). However, it does highlight you and probably help the officers notice your otherwise unnoticed potential.

Somethings That Will NOT Get You Promoted.
- The opposite of everything above.
- Complaining for nothing.
- Being a puppet, coming in and out of the company with no certainty of a future.
- Only hoping for a promotion, but not doing anything about it.
- Having a bad reputation with everyone.
- Getting caught in a lie.

Hope this helps.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://3rdklbb.blogspot.com/2007/01/wo-voons-twisted-tips-for-promotion.html' title='WO. Rules for games are often made so everyone is treated fairly and everyone has a chance to enjoy themselves. Try to think of playing by the ‘rules of life’.

Do this quiz every now and again to see how well you are going. Answer (T) True; (F) False; or (S) Sometimes.

I am quick to help a friend who needs help.
I offer help to someone who needs it, even if I’m not so keen on or I don’t know them.
I try to speak first to someone who is new to BB. I can think of 3 things
I did for someone this week without being asked. I am respectful to others.
I never speak unkindly about others.
I like to cheer someone up who is feeling sad.
I don’t get very upset when I don’t get my own way.
I can share my things happily with others.
I try to talk to people that don’t seem to fit in.

Think of others as you want them to think about you. Say only things about others that you want others to say about you. Don’t behave in ways that hurt or might hurt others. Be brave to be good. People will like you better that way.

Telling others about BB
You are one of the lucky ones—you are already in the B.B.— but what about your friends at school, Sunday School and other Boys who live near you? They would enjoy themselves too, if you brought them along to the next time your Section meets. The 2nd KK had sent a contingent to Singapore on the above dates. This will be published in conjunction with the first anniversary of Camp Temasek 4.

The main objective of our visit to Singapore is to participate in Camp Temasek 4 which was held from 1 to 5 December 2005. It is a camp which all of us looks forward to.

Days in Singapore.

27/11/2005.
We gathered at KK International Airport at 8 am today. All the boys are really excited. We took a group photo and left for Singapore by plane via Johore Bahru. After embarking and disembarking, we arrived at Singapore at around 3.30pm. We took the bus rented by our friend Mr. Vick, Captain of the 3rd Singapore Company to the BB Campus. We went down for a walk in China Town and Orchard Road. Had dinner at China Town. Some of the boys said the are tired during the walk. I wonder will they survive through the Camp Temasek? I really don’t know.

28/11/2005.
The boys start their Leadership Development Course 1 today. I didn’t join them because I went to settle my brother’s admission at Anglo Chinese School (Independent) at Dover Road today. I was scheduled to be back at HQ by 4 o’clock because we are going to the launching of the Sharity Gift box today. When I got back by 3.45pm, every body was gone and they left me behind. I missed out some special experience as Mr. Donald get to shake hand with the President of Singapore!!! It was not so bad as good Mr. Vick came back early together with our dinner. Had some chat with him and his wife. I am really amazed with the ability of her daughter in speaking Chinese. He is an Indian who married a Chinese lady but the daughter can really speak Chinese like China man. Around midnight, Patrick Yu(Capt of the Singapore 8J Company) and Dr. Yong(Ex-2nd KK) came in and we went for supper. Oh, I spent $90 in order to get a new pair of spectacles since I broke mine this morning.

29/11/2005.
2nd day of the LDC 1. They had a football game with the 3rd Coy today. A passing-out parade for the boys upon finishing their course. Nothing special today.

30/11/2005.
Went to Beach Road to get our camping equipments. Landed in the wrong OZ. We missed the bus stop and just some how got to Little India. We almost got lost but thank God, we still manage to find our way. Did some packing just now and broke my first aid badge. No choice, need to replace it since I am going for camp the next day. Had a good time of fellowship with the 3rd Coy guys to night.

1/12/2005.
Reported for Camp Temasek 4 today. Meet some Singapore boys and they wanted to exchange badges with me. The opening ceremony is good. And I found that BBS is very concern about safety of their boys. They are allowed to walk out of the contingent if you are not felling well. A BB Singapore officer told me and Sergeant Teng Di Sheng to take of our sergeant red sash. I told him this is our uniform and I will only take it off if I receive order from BBM HQ about new uniform rules. Also socialized with those in my platoon and we had a good time. They accepted and respect me. I think this is because I accepted and respect them. The same thing goes to the officers and primer.

2/12/2005.
Woke up at 5.45 am today. After getting ready, headed to the Chinese Garden for water activities. Tried my hands on raft building and rafting. Really a new experience. After lunch, went for nature adventure. Its some thing like the Amazing Race. We got all the 2 fast forward cards and we became the 1st team to complete. We would have done faster if it is not because of the 2 privates who moved like turtle. If the team is only made up of Sgt Jonathan, Sgt Ambert, S/Sgt Desmond and me, we would have halved the time. Any way, I am sure that we are still the best squad among the 60 squads in camp. Well, even they are fast enough, I don’t think they will be so lucky as us to get all the 2 fats forward cards. Went for a sharing by Mr. Glenn Lim about his testimonies. I didn’t concentrate much since I was looking around at the so advanced sound system in the auditorium. Never thought that there were such a system in a barrack.

3/12/2005.
We had boring activities today. We had skating, AZ ball, and archery in the morning; golf in the afternoon. Nothing special today. The concert tonight is a really good one. I had never been to such a concert. The Singapore boys turned wild, ran around and some even went on the stage. The camp security need to be called for duty in the end. I think they are really too much. Also helped the camp medics since they are short of man power. A lot of people got dehydrated during the concert.

4/12/2005.
Exciting day! We had rope course, rock climbing, obstacle course and paint ball today! The obstacle is nothing since I had done a lot before. The high rope course is really good. I am afraid of height but still gave it a try. Its really good. I learned one thing from it: In this world, there is nothing to be fear of. The only thing is fear it self, so you need to conquer your fear as I did just now. Didn’t try rock climbing because I injured my back muscle and fingers. Paint ball is fun for every team but mine. I was grouped together as a team with the officers. 1 of them is a police officer and the other is a soldier. Before I managed to shoot people or get shot, they hit down the bottles and accomplished the mission. It all takes less then 45 seconds. The free market is nothing different from the pasar malam at Gaya Street.

5/12/2005.
Last day of camp. The final meal is really good. We had western meal for lunch. The closing ceremony is very low profile, unlike Pesta. No band. No pipes or bugle. I will really miss camp, friends, cook house, my bunk and the toilet a lot (it doesn’t looks like a barrack, but like a hotel). First thing I did when we returned to the HQ is to take a bath. Went to the internet center to check my mail. Sleep early today.

6/12/2005.
Woke up late today. Did nothing but walking around the streets today. Went to Orchard again. Went to Night Safari to night. It was really a new experience.

7/12/2005.
Did nothing but fooling around this morning. Sgt Lowel was sick and can’t join us for the trip to Sentosa island. When we came back from Sentosa, he was sent to the hospital. Waited for him at the hospital together with Sgt Jonathan Lim and CSM Sgt Daryl Teo, both from 3rd Coy. Got back around 12 am. Packed my thing since I will be going back tomorrow. After packing, went to the youth center together with L/Cpl Nathanael to join the two 3rd Coy’s sergeants. We chatted and played some video games.

8/12/2005.
Last day in Singapore. Left for checking in after breakfast. Arrived in JB late and just in time to board the plane. Arrived in KK at 3.30pm. Its so good to be back! We had been away for 12 days, and I have another 18 days at home as I will be leaving home for my studies in KL on 26/12/05.

After words.
I had already left Singapore with full of memories. I also left the 2nd KK company and currently serving in the 3rd KL company as a primer. Camp Temasek IV is an experience that I will never forget. It’s the best camp I had ever participated in and organized. Hope that I can join the Camp Temasek 5 in year 2010, the year I graduate from university with my Bachelor in Engineering. Hereby, I would like to thank the following people for helping us in our trip to Singapore:

Mr. Vick Vijandra @ VJ - 3rd Sg. Coy captain
Mrs. VJ - wife of Mr. VJ
Mr. Godfrey Ho and Mr. Kenneth - 3rd Sg. Coy officers
Mr. Alex Chai - 70th Sg. This event was organized by Mr. Lawrence, who is also the BB Asia Executive Secretary, together with help from the staff from BBM HQ. I have to admit that initially the thought of attending this academy never crossed my mind and when they my other officers asked me to go I was a little relunctant at first. But, boy.. thank God for persuasive people.

Day 1

We gathered in BBHQ at about 12pm. We were having lunch at Mr. Peter Yap's place before that. We left HQ after some final adjustments, seeked the Lords protection and took off north towards Ipoh. Two vehicles were used, Mr. Terence drove his Myvi and HQ rented a van with Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Eric in it. We had a stop for gas at the Sungai Buloh rest stop, when a slight problem occured. It seemed like petrol was leaking from the rented van and all the situation begun to look really gream. Fortunately it was just an overflow and we were on our way again. I was pretty much the operator and hands free kit for Mr. Terence who had incoming calls throughout the journey. Of course we had a fun time talking about all sorts of things. Other than the stop in Sungai Buloh, we had only one additional stop for a toilet break, and it's all the way up to Chefoo.

Cameron Highlands wasn't really a nice place for sight seeing.. at least the town isn't. The countryside is still pretty good.. and the air and coolness is similar to that of Genting and Frasers.. being at a high altitude. Cameron's is at the turnoff from Tapah, which is about 2 hours from KL. It takes another hour to navigate the whindy roads to Cameron's. It was an uneventful drive and we reached Chefoo Methodist Center at around 4.30pm.

We begun unloading and setting up the moment we arrived. The other officers were busy making arrangements for the delegates through registration and other matters while I was busy setting up the PA in the hall where all the classes will be held.

Only a handful of people arrived before us from Bukit Mertajam and Singapore. 1st JB was the first to arrive after us. Once they've checked in their NCO's, who were on worship duty that night, begun assisting me with the PA and other technicalities. I have to say that they were highly efficient and dispelled whatever stereotypes and impressions I had of the company before this event.

As preparations were still being carried out into the night, more delegates started to arrive, particular the ones from overseas. One of the flights were delayed and as a result a whole batch of attendees were an behind time. Most of them arrived after dinner. Later on they revealed to us another reason why they were delayed.

Worship was led by the 1st JB members who sang a mixture of Indonesian and English songs. It was indeed a great joy to see so many people of different nationalities praising God. It was a good effort by the two 1st JB sergeants as well, both girls. You can tell that at least one of them was very nervous. Thank God everything went smoothly. We also prayed for those who were still on their way up to Camerons, it was raining heavily and the roads were more dangerous to drive on.

After worship, all of us were introduced to the organizers of this event. The principal of the BB Asia Academy was Mr. Lim K. Tham, the former Executive Secretary for BB Singapore. He briefed us of what to expect from the course and that maintaining a positive attitude is the key to making this event successful. Following Mr. K. Tham's briefing, he briefly introduced Mr. Lawrence, who is the BB Asia full-time-to-be executive secretary.

The session was concluded by Reverend Richrard Tok, who came straight from the bus without enough time even to check in, gave a message and vesper. He then revealed to the rest of us that the bus was delayed due to a series of landslides which occured on the way up to Camerons.

After vesper, supper was prepared for all.. and it was bed time for most of us. The HQ staff were still awake late into the night preparing for the Academy's launch the next day. I had my share of sleeplessness as well.. as I was up fixing up the PA.. which never seemed to work well due to the PA's setup in the hall. Once that was done, it was a nice hot shower and lights out for a satisfying first day. I haven't met any solid new friends yet, except Cpl. Chung Wee and Sgt. Christopher from 1st JB, but I'm sure I'll get a chance in the next 4 days.

Day 2

As usual, I had a slight problem waking up in the morning, but it was better than most occasions. I really thank Joseph Loy from BB Singapore for giving me a wake up call.. if not I would've late to open up the hall for the worship team to practice. Since I was by default responsible for the equipment in the hall. So after a quite teeth brushing I was off to the hall.

Breafast was a plain continental set.. one of my favourites. We had our day cut out for us, with opening cermony right after worship. I changed into my uniform early.. which my red jacket as the second layer. It was aircond cold up in Cameron's. To launch this year's BB Asia Academy, we have Dr. M. Kayvaes, a minister in the Prime Ministers department and a former BB member from 4th KL.

After a photo session, a short tea break, the academy begun. Mr. Robinson did a session on programme idea. Later on Mr. Lim K. Tham did another session on BB Philosophy, Culture and Traditions. He basically talked about BB Asia and what the goals of the BB ministries of the world have in common.. which is to commit to the BB Object, something which is also emphasised by Mr. Robinson earlier on. The goal of BB should be focused on 2 parts and for us as BB officers have two callings. The first is an evangelical calling, where we're called to bring forth the Good News through the BB movement to those whom do not know Him. The other is the basically the development of character.

Most of us were looking forward to the programme at night.. which was a visit to the Cameron's pasar malam down in town. Unfortunately, during dinner.. there was a moderate shower which spoiled the plan.. as we were supposed to walk down to town. So, instead of the night market Mr. Lawrence conducted a games session for us. After vesper and sharing it was the end of Day 2.

Day 3

The next day started pretty much the same way like the second.. except for breakfast. It was to be sunrise service out in the open... unfortunately for some reason we decided to have it indoors instead. Reverend Raymond Sim led the morning's sunrise service, spoke of Taming the Tongue and emphasised how all of us in the Brigade ministry should learn to work togther and not criticize each others differences.

Most of the days sessions are conducted by Mr. Timothy Tan, a former 2nd Penang Boy. He speicializes in training leaders in well known corporations and MNCs, where work sometimes takes him overseas for training. I remember him mentioning he did a session for MYOB.. that big Australian Accounting IT Software company... wow.

I guess the what made his sessions interesting was how relevant he was towards the current trends. He was not afraid to speak his mind.. sometimes using "semi-foul" words for effect.. but never failing to apologize when he realizes he's crossed the line.

Usually, I'll be quite reluctant to participate in an ice-breaker or a game.. However, his approace made it quite enjoyable.

There was this game, which was basically "one, two, juice".. but with an additional twist to it. Initially, everyone starts as an egg. Those who win the first round will move on to become a chicken while the loser remains an egg. Only characters with a similar character can challenge one another. So, in the next level.. after a chicken-chicken duel, the victor will move on to become a dinosour.. while the loser is demoted back to an egg. The same process then continues.. dino versus dino. The victor will become an Immortal, while the loser will be demoted back to a chicken. Ultimately, as it turns out, there can be only one egg, one chicken, one dino.. while everyone else would end up as immortals.

It was quite a scene seeing so many adults playing a game like this.. and right from the start i had a bad feeling where I would end up. I had a 10 time loosing streak.. and the furtherest i got to was a dino.. just a step away from being normal. As the game progress... more and more ppl were left standing in their immortal poses while I was stuck at the other various lower levelled positions. And guess what... I was the EGG! The lowest of the lot.... arghhh... how embarassing.. =.=". But the game was fun, and I got a big bar of kitkat for it which on one else had (other than the chicken and dino).

Remaining days:

Well, we basically had a wonderful time of fellowship. I'm glad I came and got to know many friends from all over, particularly Joseph Loy from 30th Singapore and members from 1st Johor Bahru (Chung Wee, Christopher, Siau Wen, Slyvia, Hellen, Peih Ling, Michelle and others who were friendly enough to approach a weirdo guy like me =P. I'm sure our friendship will last as long as we have the Anchor as part of our souls.

Interesting Article

Hi, I thought I'd share this - taken from BBA Website..

BB is Unique. For contemporary local church work with young people, the biggest challenge is not attracting young people, but helping those who identify as Christians to be committed long-term as fruitful followers of Christ beyond their young life. Long-term results are rarely achieved without long-term work. With that, Brigade is uniquely placed, as it is the only local church children's and youth Christian framework that offers consistent long-term intensive training that spans the entire school-age life of a young person. While recognising whatever age they are and the capabilities they have, BB constantly encourages and supports them to always keep developing further in all areas of their lives. This makes BB relevant and attractive to all (those inside and outside the church).

Our movement's biggest challenge today is communicating why we should continue to exist and what we actually offer to our world. With so many other groups adopting techniques pioneered in BB (small group structure, camping, leadership development programs, mentoring), many believe that only trivial surface details like what we wear, how we stand and walk, and what we call each other are the things that justify why we should exist. By not being clear about who we are and what we offer, many find it difficult to support our work (especially when there are so many other 'competing' programs that also need support).

So next time someone in the church asks what is BB - don't say a Christian version of scouts, or an uniformed youth group - tell them:"BB is about long-term training for long-term results - for young people to lead and impact their world (with God's kingdom)."Remember no other widespread Christian young people work is intentionally and actively working long-term like Brigade is.Keep up the great work in your continued efforts and desire to advance God's kingdom.

A Lesson in Cleanliness

It was during closing parade when an unusual sight, in an unusual place for fall-out occured. Imagine approximately 100 people cramming themselves in the tight spaces of the YMCA lounge.. so much so till some of them had to move along the pathway area to do their push-ups. Why the push-ups? Well.. some smart "behinds/donkeys" left their foods and drink packages in the hall. Sergeant Hooi Chin Gian finally decided to do something about it. It's very weird to have this culture going on with our members. It's just a matter of looking for a rubbish bin an throwing it in.

Anyway, the grandtotal was 40 push-ups. 10 for every rubbish recovered. As though doing push up's in that tight area wasn't bad enough.. the Sergeant gave a countdown - 10 seconds to get on the floor and kick off the push ups.

Well.. hopefully the BB will be able to instill civic culture in our Boys.. where else are they going to learn? In Malaysia... the adults too are doing it. Well... that's not gonna happen in 3rd KL. At least not with a few push-ups everytime that happens..

My First NCO Training School!

First Day
When we arrived at the school, we saw many members from the other companies from KL. Some of them are looked a little blur, but at the same time you get the same impression that some of them are the smart and cool types. What a mix of personalities!

At approximately 10am, our officer Mr. Voon and 5 NCOs from 3rd KL and 4th KL falled us in for the opening parade. Our camp commandant, Captain Mah, gave us a warm welcome and a short briefing of what was to be expected from the camp. We were then divided into 5 squads, mixed together with the other companies.

Around 11.30am, our classes begun. There were classes catered to two groups – one for English and another for Chinese speaking audiences. Most of the Chinese class speakers were officers also from 3rdkl, so we had quite abit of fun. At 5pm, we had Drill. Not long after it started to rain very heavily, which was a relief to some of us as it probably meant that we got to skip drill =P. Unfortunately the NCOs did not let us go, and called us to continue on, but that was pretty fun too.

Day Two
Today all of us had to wake up early.. most of us feeling extremely tired and lazy. Up in line for the day were a lot of classes. Some of us were even “fishing” in class, while others were quietly chit chatting with friends.. that’s what happened in the Chinese class anyway. Mr. Joe taught us a little game called ‘007 Bang-ar’, which was a hilarious and nice game! Mr. Joe led another game at 2pm, which was how to conduct a sing-a-long session. The songs he used were really nice and romantic.. haha. Then at 5pm, it was the same as yesterday – a heavy rain, but drill still went on.

A night, it was FUN TIME! We had a group dynamic session. In squads, we had to think of a sketch based on a movie. Some of the squads were able to come up with funny sketches, while some pretty.. erm.. pretty dull.

We had a nice, relaxing sleep at half past midnight. But not forgetting the next day was exam day.. therefore Mr. Mah gave us some extra time to study. So at 1am we had lights off.. and starting turning into pigs.

Day Three
Today we woke up early as usual, but today all the member did not look sleepy, instead they all looked very worried and scared, because today we had to face a scary exam. Before and during breakfast some of them were still holding on to their hand books and tried to remember all the things learnt on the first and second day.

At 9am we have a morning devotion, and some where STILL holding on to their hand books before devotion started! Around 10am we got a chance to polish and wear our uniforms and at 10.30 we falled-in for a uniform check.

The organizers of the camp set a criteria - If one members uniform is not well polished and wore nicely, then the whole squad can’t go into the exam hall. When the exam started all of us just felt worried. Finally, at 12.30pm all of us finished the exam – most of us were feeling just confident, feel fresh and cool. Then we ha a very enjoyable final lunch together. After lunch we need to go back to dorms and pack up our own stuffs before the closing parade at 2pm.

It was a bittersweet moment during the closing parade. On one had we were glad that we were finally going home but on the other hand we were sad as we had to depart with our new friends from the other companies.

After closing we had a group “family” photo session. There was a funny moment as we were punished for making fun of one of the leaders. We had to do frog jumps because of that.

At 4pm, we all were on our way home.

In this training course, we learnt how to do be a good leader and what TEAMWORK really means. I hope what we learnt during this course can be used in our company in the right way.

by Alex Tan
Edited by Kenny Voon

Drill Squad

photo:L-R: Sgt.Darryn, Pte. If someone in the drill team makes a mistake, we do not laugh at him. We laugh with him. When we encounter a complicated drill command, we learn to brainstorm our way through, covering up for each and everyone of our team members too! Remember the purposes of learning drill.

In fact, it was DRILL that gave the founder inspiration to found BB. Sir Smith was thinking how he could use DRILL to control grown up men but couldn't do anything to control the boys in sunday school. Therefore, he got the idea to found BB. So, remember, DRILL is an important part in every BB boy's life.

To all the new privates, hope you all can learn to find fun during drill. Not the "free and easy" kind of fun, but the "fun of working in a team" . Sweat together, Enjoy together.

P.S. This post is dedicated to Pte. History means incidents that happened a long time ago. Every single thing that happens today had its own history and it happened to the B-3 too. So let's seek the history of the B-3.

Actually, the B-3 started in 1987 and it was called "The Sextant" before it changed to B-3.

The first issue was very simple and it was done by Mr. Lawrence Tay Hoon Sian. After that, he began to seek the boys to help him.

The purpose of starting the B-3 is to give current news to the boys. It also tells the boys about the incidents that has occured and plans for the future.

Later, the B-3 was distributed to the other companies so that they will also know what had happened in 3rd KL Company and the company's future aims.

(Extract from B-3 , Generation3 Issue3 Aug-Nov1995)

The B-3 was missing in action until recently revived by W/O Voon. Complete with new look and new logo, the B-3 is set to reach out again!

By the way, in the olden days, the B-3 motto was : "There for the Story, Victory and History"

3rd KL Pesta Drill Video

A video of the drill team during Pesta. Washed my face and brushed my teeth then I went down...*I had one eye swollen T_T* The time was 6.15 or so when I reached down thats the time Voon wanted us to be awaked in the basketball court in our drill boots BUT VOON didnt show up *what an example =P advanced sleeping techniques eh?* in the end Han Sheng came down and falled us in... and waited for VOON!!!! we all ended up lying down on the basketball court half-asleep until it started raining *Voon still hasnt showed up x__x* Finaly someone called Voon and he told us to get some breakfast then go back to our rooms and change into our uniform. We were falled in and some of our officers inspect our uniform before the actual inspection. Some of the boys that werent in the drill team were running around with kiwi, Brasso, water and polishing cloths. Inspection was a fast and brief one, they didnt inspect the whole drill team just certain people *namely ME =P* then suddenly Sir Ng came after the inspection and said "Congratulations you are going to the finals. The first 5 teams bye bye already". If I'm not mistaken 8th Penang went out before us *right beside us whom Voon said was a threat*. We we're the 8th team to perform. Then came the time to march into the drill ground... somehow I wasnt nervous but I could sense most of the team was nervous. Maybe its because they didnt had any competition experience. Anyways their nervousness caused the whole team to march real fast and I had to keep up even during hentak kaki I didnt even had enough time to get my knees up to 90 degrees because the rest of the team was stamping so fast. Penang state boo-ed and jeered at us as we entered *i can clearly remember* and so it began...... Our "yang tinggi kekanan, rendah kekiri, dalam satu barisan paras!!" was screwed up because one of our member took 2 steps less then the rest of the team *there goes 1 major mistake* and "disebelah kiri jadikan skuad" was ALMOST screwed up because our commander ended the command on the wrong leg... lucky the team was smart enough to take 1 extra step before executing the command. The rest of the sequence was smooth... our commander reported again and we marched out =).

Then came the time for the results to be announced *AFTER SEVERAL HOURS OF WAITING??? HOW INCONSIDERATE!!!* as they were announcing the 10 teams that would enter the Finals we we're standing together with the 1st KL drill team in one semi-circle. I was so afraid that we didnt make it but at No.7 "3rd Kuala Lumpur Company" we were jumping like mad monkeys and screaming hahaha. We had 15 minute rest before the Finals began.... so I went to see my guardians and my friends went to see their parents and some were even celebrating in the toilet *.......* after 15 minutes we were falled in just for awhile, our commander said "just rest now but when team no.5 goes out remember to come back here and fall-in" we were team no.7 to perform *lucky number ^^* 1st JB was team no.8 *o.o*. As team no.5 was performing we had to listen to Voon "crap" "we got into the finals by procedure. We cant afford any major mistakes this round" the whole KL state was on us and supporting us *we were the only KL company to make it through the 1st round* Voon also said "if we managed to boot 8th Penang out of the 1st round then 1st JB wouldnt be a problem" <<< that boosted the teams morale *thanks Voon =P*. I was praying really hard that we could get top 3 and make Sir Tan proud..... and so we entered the drill ground... the sequence was fine UNTIL one of the members and my best-friend James almost fainted.. his perlahan jalan was way out of timing and I was scared that his leg would be wrong on the next command *ke kanan pusing* indeed he was on the wrong foot but he stamped with the other leg anyways *bless him* the rest of it ended just fine.

After we marched out I had doubts about my dream of getting top-3 after the last team had performed I was waiting for the results then someone announced that the results would be announced later after the singing competition *......* what a bummer -______- and the end of the day we got 2nd placing woohoo a position that 3rd KL has nvr managed to get until now *we break history yeah* I remember standing beside Voon during the drill results announcements. He looked calm. I taught that we were getting 3rd placing..... but that position went to another team, then 2nd placing "3rd Kuala Lumpur Company" the whole company jumped and scream like mad people even Voon went wild *lol <__<* the team all ran up to the stage and claimed our prize then took some photo's and returned back to our company to see who will be champion. I taught it was gonna be 1st JB but it went to 16th Penang haha and that just made us more victorious because we beat 1st JB hahahaha after back slapping Voon and dropping gold dust on him we all went home with our history breaking trophy and had a good rest =)

Private Low Kent

Testimonial form Private Low Kent

wazzup fellow 3rd KL member *or not <__<* Pvt. Low Kent here -___-" its been 9 years now since the day I joined into 3rdKL's Family. I've joined BB since 1997 *earlier then darryn by a few weeks* during that time the jr section was just re-formed *according to sir edward it was closed down before that due to some reason* during my jr days the BB meetings were more tough then my current senior section days and yea sir edward was my officer back then and primer jason khoo hahaha I remember on my 1st day primer jason gave the new recruits some work in one of the classrooms. I passed up the work last because i did it kinda slow. After the session with primer jason it was drill time with sir edward.I remember him asking me "Do you know what drill is?" and I looked around and saw everywhere people marching up and down so I said "erm... marching?" and he said "something like that lah" hahaha. My 2nd year in BB and I was promoted to jr.leading boy *happy happy* . My 3rd year in BB won best-commander award for the KL battalion foot drill competition *oh the backslapping PAIN!!*. Our officer sir edward split us in to 3 squads namely Team A, Team B and Team C. The way he splits us into this squads to some maybe unfair...We are sperated into different squads based on our drill *I was always in team A ^^* Alot of boys that I know since I joined BB *jr and senior section* have already resigned. People like Benedict Ng or Kalidas or Henry Lum or Darryl Ang, James Tan and many more all resigned. I didnt get my gold award T.T!!! OKOK to my senior section days 1st year in senior section already PESTA!!! and suddenly out of the blue our ex-primer wong zhi yie *now known as sir joe* came back and trained the band for pesta. You know.. standing on the field blowing your songs is exhilirating and *though you lose* FUN!!... Now almost all boys in any company will at some point feel tired of BB and feel like quiting but they dont want to, I've had such a problem last year I wanted to quit but i couldnt because everytime I taught of resigning I remember those past 8 years I spent in BB those happy moments *and sad* I showed up whenever I wished, and this sort of got our captain to start asking me about my loyalty in BB. I dont know maybe it was PMR or something... after captain tan spoke with me I realize that I have only 2 choices 1.Resign 2.Be present for every meeting . You can guess which I chose. During 2005 awards and enrolement day I was present but not as a BB boy but as a guest and sir tan said to me "Low Kent, I hope that you will be in uniform next year". And so came 2006 I am now very active during company meetings and alot of people say that I have changed alot, though I dont feel it but other people can see it *hurray for me^^* Though our company has very few boys left from the "old days" and badge standards drop drastically 3rdKL is still my family.

Low Kent

p.s. I always led the whole jr.section to pull voon's "bulu kaki" during camps =) and COLGATE!!!!

Testimony from Sergeant Chiew Kin Yan

I remember, my first day in the 3rd Kuala Lumpur BB.. in std.4... that time, the green building was so unfamiliar, and the tar was rough on my canvas shoes. Thanks to my friend, former Jr. Leow Wee Chong who persuaded me to join, and another friend, former Jr. Alwin Rajasuria who provided transport for a certain period of time.Yes, without both of them, I wouldn't have known and joined this organization.

On my first day in BB, I already took part in Opening Parade. Actually, it was because ALVIN was late and he rushed in to report and pulled me along accidently. I didn't really know the moves and just followed around... I remember seeing the other recruits standing in the shade talking to Lt.Terence Tay while I, another recruit, was doing this thing called "drill" on my first day. The Parade NCO was Sgt. Yeoh Chee Keong, who had a deep and powerful voice.... and LOUD boots.. It was kinda scary at first, and I was just following blindly what the person next to me was doing. Stamping his feet ... ?!?!?!

OK, the uniform was really cool... and we had those colourful little button-like badges ... we had a great officer, W/O Edward Lim who was funny yet serious when needed. We also had Primer Jason Khoo, a presidents man who is now the Junior Section Head Officer. He was helpful especially during our badgework classes.

In fact, I am really thankful for such great officers such as Mr. Edward, Mr. Jason, Ms. May Chiam, and Mr. Daryl Leong. They are the ones who made my junior section experience so memorable. In fact, till today my batch who were under Mr. Edward still holds highly the Gold Award. To many of us, the Gold Award is cherished even more than the Presidents Award. Yes, it is true.

Back to the story, I don't remember our awards day that year, but I remember going for 10th Kuala Lumpur's FIRST awards day later that year. They were really a strong and happening company during that time. I also remember, as I was waiting for our company members to arrive at 10thKL's homeground, I was approached by a 10th KL parent , who took one glance at my nametag and said in a kind voice "Darryn, why aren't you falling in?" .... that shows how un-famous BB was during those days. I think the parent thought that there is only one BB Company in each state, and "10th" is given because they are the 10th state to have BB in it... (correct me if i'm wrong, thats what the parent REALLY thought... )

and of course, I remember founders day at 1st Kuala Lumpur BB. I remember seeing the letters M.B.S , and W/O Edward said do not make fun by saying Monkey Boys School or anything like that. Immediately I had the impression that those letters DID stand for Monkey Boys School. At that time, little did I have the idea that I was actually going to STUDY IN THAT PLACE where I now call my second home. I remember watching the sunset and the LRT passing at Plaza Rakyat station. That scene is still there in M.B.S and who wants to come to see it with me is welcome... hehehe!!

1999 - At the early part of 1999, the captain , Mr. Tan Chee Keong, whom I didn't really know well, was approaching just his 2nd Term as captain. He asked me to choose which band instrument I wanted to play. Naturally, the instrument which seemed easiest, most interesting and loudest was the DRUMS ... but there was no empty slot , so I was asked to choose again.

Looking around, I spotted some shiny pipes being blown. There was a long silver one with 3 valves, and a similar long gold one with no valves. There were also copper coloured ones and a gold one with 1 solitary valve. This section was amusing!! .... I immediately joined them. My leader was Cpl Sim Rick Kee and Sgt Ng Yee Khai. (I guess you all have heard of them at least once) . I started out with the BUGLE , (sadly, all are now missing except ONE) ..... I wasn't that fast a learner, and during band camp, Cpl Sim would always point me out ... " JUNIOR, why are you out of timing" .... "JUNIOR, you are not the only one marching here" .... of course, that time I was the only junior, and he was not familiar with my name.

That was 7 years ago. Now, I can play nearly the complete range of Brass and a wide selection of songs, as well as being the longest serving Brass section member alongside Sgt. Lum King Hui, who was a recruit when I was in std.5 .... BB certainly did change me a lot.

2000 - I was losing interest in BB. Due to my UPSR leave, I was drifting further apart, and on the 30th of December 2000, the phone rang.... mum said "Darryn, it's your call" .... I rarely get calls..... who might this be???

...... that was Captain Tan Chee Keong on the phone. He asked me to come for BB the following saturday, the first week of January. I gave lots of excuses, but..... all those who know Capt. Tan, you can guess what happened. For those who don't, he managed to persuade me to come back.

In my first year in Senior Section, I was put into Squad A-2 . My Squad Leader was Cpl Frederick Wong, and his assistant was L/cpl Voon Zhen Yi. Voon was on SPM leave and I never saw him or met him before!!! Then he was temporarily replaced by L/cpl Lim Hock King for the duties of Asst Sq Leader. The first year was a great one, with me getting everything i could get. I got 10 badges that year alone, where my friends only got 4.

In form 2 and 3, secondary schoolwork was beginning to put the pressure on me. Although I was much more enthusiastic in Senior Section than I was in Juniors, I was beginning to lose that enthusiasm too.... until at a camp in Tanjung Sepat, W/O David Ngo told me that I should never fall even when disappointments pushed me down.... I followed his advice until today.

The move from Junior to Senior Section had also brought up a change in one boy, Hooi Chin Gian. He was one of the noisiest and not a very well disciplined junior, but in senior section he dropped all those negative attitudes and really strived to change. He was fast and active in everything, and was never dependent on anyone. He is a good example of a true BB Boy.

Here I am now, in the middle of my 6th year in Senior Section. During these years in BB, many changes have been made by BBM, YMCA(our homeground) and other people. Officers and Instructors came, some stayed, some left.... the band is now no longer a Flute and Bugle Corps (pronounced as "Corr", not "Corps") but it's a Wind Band with complete range.... and I see boys come and go, many new friends, and memories of the friends who have left BB..... memories from the two pesta's I attended (2001 and 2003) ..... the Green building was changed to Blue, and it's now Yellow, and completely changed......

In retrospect, all these has made me a better person. How? Well, if you all know me since I was in junior section, you will know that I was a very quiet person and not serious at all. In fact, I was also quite lazy. I'm not saying here that these bad habits have left me entirely, but now I am more confident and able to address a crowd of people easier than before.

I also have many many more BB friends from all around the country, people I know just because they are linked to me through this organization. In fact, I do not see this feature in other uniformed bodies. They do not make friends from around the country within their organization as easily as BB members do.

Another thing I realised after all these years is that I'm now at the top, soon to finish my "career" as a Senior Section boy. I'm no longer a person who comes to BB to enjoy the activities planned by the seniors, but I myself are part of the seniors who plan for the company. At times, I regret for not taking the proper cause of action when I should have done, but then again God is always there blessing me with people who tell me and guide me when I go wrong.

In fact, God HAS really blessed the grand old company (3rd KL) . How the company has survived through the ups and downs is itself an amazing testimony of God's love. There has never (as far as I can remember) been a shortage of leaders to take charge and become the driving force of the company. God also has provided us with the resources we need. God is the true shephard of 3rd KL.

As a leader now, I have to spend more time focusing on training the members who will one day be in my shoes. Train them how to avoid the mistakes I have made. Train them to be more efficient than their predecessor. Train them to be leaders who learn to place their trust in God. When us leaders have successfully done that, it is a satisfaction for us to know that we have played our part in shaping a person's future.

In fact, that is truly what my officers have done. Even though we may have had (and will have) many conflicts in ideas and thinking, but every interaction in itself is a life long lesson. It teaches us to be a person who can stand up for what we believe in, a person who knows when he should submit to others, a person who leads by serving and a person who serves to lead.

Look, i'm sure you'll agree with me that many people have benefitted from this organization. For example, our own Private Low Kent. When he first joined senior section, he was still in his "junior section" mode... remember all those camps with colgate, camps where you couldn't sleep at night in fear of him, camps where you still couldn't sleep because he would be talking all night? ... BB meetings which he will be running around and talking the whole time .. Yes, if you know him then, you'd surely remember. However now he has changed alot. He knows when he should be heard and when he should not. I would say that at least part of it comes from BB training. So much for the noisy people. =P .

Anyway, to all the officers reading this, I appreciate you! Thanks for everything and thank you BB. Without all of you, I wouldn't be who I am today.

-Sergeant Chiew

Ideas?

3rd Kuala Lumpur Company has been around since 1957 and yet there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Submit your recommendations of what the company (or you) can do to make things better.

(This is a recruits assignment. I've decided that BB too should say something about him. I will talk about him from a personal view point without making it sound like a funeral service testimony.

Paul Tan Yik Mun is just like any one of us, with similar dreams and ambitions. His struggle was to keep up with the rest of us as he suffered from numerous health problems. Back then, he was unable to do heavy physical excercises or follow us for jogs in fears of an asthma attack.. should one occur could see him ending up on medical supervision for a week. He also could not be allowed to have his body wet overtime as if he catches cold it would lead to severe shivering, fever, and eventually shock.

Paul is a year younger than me. We both studied in the same school from primary at SK Taman Desa , to secondary at SMK Taman Desa 2 which was later renamed as SMK Desa Perdana. Paul joined the BB in the Junior Section at Standard 6 (which no doubt proved to be a wise choice.. as it comes with an extra badge into Seniors). My first impression of him was, a 'small midget sized average human being'. After I got to know him better.. he was really just like any of us. He was very verbal and never passes up any program thrown at him from the BB, although some maybe against his parents will.

BB Club Photo during Rowley's (a tebby bear from Australia) visit in 1998 SMK Taman Desa 2.

Paul's on the bottom row, second from right.

Due to his health conditions he has often 'highlighted himself' in order to gain attention and respect from his peers. Many people called him a show off, but I felt that he was just trying to be normal (ok.. maybe at times he overdoes it to attract the girls).

In the BB, just like any private working towards promotion, Paul would often volunteer himself in any situation. In many occasions he has also taken lead in several practices (KL Battalion Drill competition and Pesta 2000), speaking of which he was most punctual and regular despite his conditions. Although many didn't know or appreciate it, he has never used his health conditions as an excuse to sit out "tough and tiring" BB programs and has pushed himself to not-slow-down-progress of the team - true espirit-de-corp.

KL Battalion Drill Competition cum Founders Day 1999. 3rd KL Co. Drill team.

Paul's the second from the right.

Paul was with us until Sept 2000, a month after the Enrolments & Awards Day. Having won the Pesta a month or two back, all eyes were set on promotions for the hard efforts put in by deserving members who have made the success of the Pesta possible true their initiative and passion for the company.

It was however a sad day for us.. the beginning of a major crisis for 3rd KL as that year, many Privates who deserved a promotion, such as Paul, did not receive it. Instead, a lame lazy suck up which I'll only name as Kit got the promotion. He was the only new NCO.

Although the officers gave the excuse that "if you are loyal to the company and really deserve to be an NCO.. you will not quit!".. I doubt in reality things really work out that way. Paul and a few others (namely Poh Yueng Zhi and several other Desa Perdanaians) did exactly what the other members did not want to do. You see, the 3rd Kuala Lumpur almost didn't make it for the Pesta.. all thanks to passive-conservative-low-life-lazy-NCOs-from-SMK "ehem" which simply voted not to go. When the Captain eventually forced us to, no doubt the "ehem" NCOs were not bothered about the Pesta. So guess who fuelled the fire? People like Paul, Yueng Zhi, Kenrick, Rick, Jonathan Scully and myself (Terence Ng wanted to pull out too. Loser. Pengkhianat.) Imagine after you have given so much.. sacrificed your time and energy.. doing something the others won't do.. and even being a private acting the role of an NCO.. and your efforts go unnoticed and punished to a certain extent... what would you do?

To me, Paul's resignation (and the others) lie as a bitter reminder to me, now as an officer, of how we need to know our members well.. not to be ignorant. It also teaches us to be careful with promotions as it definitely means alot to teenagers. Officers should never assume a members maturity and capability.. they should know it.

Paul was definately loyal and faithful to the BB. But I guess, it needs to be a two way thing to work out, ha?

3rd Kuala Lumpur Band Pesta 2000. Paul's the second on the left.

I remember bits of pieces from the speech Paul gave at the Enrolment & Awards Day.. he roughly said that "it was the BB.. and the people in BB which made my life possible.. the people in BB encouraged me to strive and push harder.. which allowed me to overcome my health limits.. and has made me become the more confident and normal person I am today.."

At this very moment, Paul would be spending his 3rd week in a coma in HUKM. He is still steadfastly holding on to his live.. and at the moment is touching and inspiring the lifes of his peers and people around him. He is Sure and Stedfast.

________

Note: I would like to ask all members, Christian and non-Christian to pray for his recovery. The hospital is proving to be a real flop. He has had one or two life threatening situations due to the hospitals inefficiency and ignorance. Please ask for the Lords protection on Paul. After he wakes up, we'll invite him to give us his testimony.

For daily updates on Paul please visit:
http://ycblogspot.blogspot.com/

To have a wider perspective of Paul, visit his blog at:
http://www.xanga.com/hmaker

Ex-3rd KL member in a coma

Please visit this site. Well, first of all a blog is not a waste of time. It's pretty much a means of recording historic documents informally which would otherwise be handled solely by the company's official website.

One of the main super-advantages of the blog is that it allows boys to contribute ideas in real-time without necessarily going through the 3rd KL website. Articles and postings, formal and informal are welcomed as there is no real restriction using this blog.

Above all, this is a means for YOU, members of 3rd KL to participate more actively in our events. If you're too shy, angry, sad, happy, overjoyed, high, or having any thoughts.. this is the place for it be heard.

I sincerely hope that all members of the company will participate in this scheme which will ultimately lead to a more progressive and cool 3rd KL Co.
